Description

(No Mod-l.)
E. L. BABCOGK.
CLUTCH. Patented Nov. 22, 1887.
.E mi@ u UNiTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ERSKINE L. BABCOCK, OF CUYAHOGA FALLS., OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE FALLS RIVER COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
/ CLUTCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettera Patent No. 373.425, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed May 10. 1887. Serial No. 237.614. A(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that 1,-ERsKINE, L. BABcooK.' of Cuyahoga Falls, Summit county? State. of Ohio, have invented la new and useful Improvement in Clutches, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a clutching mechanism by which the/motions of a shaft may be communicated at pleasure to a pulley, drum, or thelike by means which are powerful, simple, and inexpensive.
It consists in locating a friction-shoe in proper position to bear against a ring on the pulley or the mechanism to be turned, and mounting the shoe upon a reciprocating piece which is in turn supported in guideways on an arm connected with the shaft, and which is actuated by a lever or levers connected with a shifter.
In the drawings I have represented the form of mechanism which I at present believe to be the best for the purpose of carrying out my invention.
-Figure 1 -is a central longitudinal section through the axis of a pulley having mymechanism att-ached. Fig. 2 isa transverse section of the same through the line il, Figui..
a is the shaft.
b b are respectively the rim and hub of a pulley which is free to revolve upon the shaft,
but is held in place bythe collar c on oneside and the collar d on the other side.
e is a ring connected with the pulley.
fis the shoe, which may be faced with a' 3 5 friction-surface, of wood or other suitable material, to bear against the interior side of the ring e. The shoe f is mounted upon the extremity of a piece, g, which is provided at its inner extremity with a set-screw, h. The piece 4o gis connected with the shaft a through the arm i, projecting radially from the collar d, the connections being such that the piece g is free to reciprocate radially to and from the shaft. Connected with the shaft is also the lever j, which is provided with a cam-surface, k, and which is so pivoted as to cause this cam-surface to operate upon thehead of the set-screw h as said lever is moved. The arm of said lever j is pivoted at its outer extremity 5o to a link, l, which is also pivot-sii the shifter m, as shown in the drawings. A spring, n, is so arranged as to produce an inward pressure upon the piece g, which has a tendency to diseugage the friction-surface of the shoe f from the ring e of the pulley, so that when the 55 piece g is not forced outward by theaction of the lever j the friction-surfaces will be out of contact.
In construction I lind it convenient to make the piece g in the form of a rod, which, if 6o cylindrical, may be prevented from revolving by a set-screw, o, which fits in agroove on the piece g.' I also fndit convenient in construction to employ the anges p p', which are perforated, so as to form guideways for the piece g. Thus, also, a bearing-surface is a'orded by the surface of the flange p for the spring ln, l which spring may be provided with another bearing-surface by means ofthe ange q, connected with the piece g. 7o
The lever j is shown as pivotally connected to the shaft at 1' on one side of the arm i, and is pivotally connectedto the link l on the opposite side thereof, a hole being cut through the arm o suiioient to enable the lever to operatein this position. It will also be observed that in the drawings I haverepresented four arms z', each of which is provided with a duplicate of the mechanism which I have described. The number of said arms is immaterial.
The operation of my contrivance may be described as follows: The drawings represent the friction-surfaces as being forced into contact with each other, where they are substantially locked by reason of the fact that the jointed link Z has passed slightly beyond the vertical. To release the friction-surfaces the shifter mis moved slightly to the right, Fig. 1, thereby lowering the cam-surface on the lever j, and thus permitting the spring n to throw the piece g inwardly, so as to separate the friction-surfaces. The presence of thesetscrew h enables the taking up of the wear of the parts.
I 'have described the best form known to me at present for utilizing my invention; but obviously the construction and mechanism described may be changed in various particu- I ars without departing from the scope of my invention.
I claimposed bet'ween flange p and collar q, the lever In combination, the pulley, the ring e, conj. fule'runl'ed to the collard at one e'nd and procentrio about the shaft, the collar d, secu red vided with a` cam-surface, k, the shifter m. and to the shaft and provided with arm t', having the link l, connecting the shifter with the free 5 ilangesp and p', tigre fpiece g, bearing at its endof-theleverj,allsubstantiallyasdescribed. x 5
outer extremity t e riet-ion sur ace adapted to bear against ring e, said piece g extending ERSKINE L' BABCOCK' inwardly toward the ycenter of the shaft and Witnesses: mounted in guideways inthe flanges p p', and H. J. STAMBAUGH, to provided with collar q, the spring n, inter- SAML. HIGGS.
It is hereby certified that the name of the assignee in Letters Patent No. 373,425, granted November 22,1887, upon the application of Erskine L. Babcock, of Gujfahoga Falls, Ohio, for an improvement in Clutchesf was erroneously printed at the head of the specification the Falls River Company, that said name should have been printed the FallsvRivet Compa/ny; and that said Letters Patent should be read with this correc- 'tion therein that the same may conform to the record ofthe case in the Patent Oice.
Signed, countersigned, and sealed this 29th day of November, A. D. 1887.
