BAG-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part ofl Letters Patent No. 373,199, dated November 15, 1887.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED SoHEDiN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Wheaton, in the county of Traverse and State of Minnesota,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders;v and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to theaccompanyng drawing, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to bagholders'; and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed, and also shown in the drawing, which is a perspective view, with parts broken away, of a device embodying my invention.

The object of the invention is the production of a simple and compact device for supporting bags and holding their mouths open while being fllled,and which will readily adapt itself to different sizes of bags without any changing of parts.

The plate A, designed to be attached to the Wall, has vertically-apertured lugs a, one near each end, which support the bolt or rod B, passed through the apertures therein. The bracket D, mounted upon said bolt or rod so as to turn and move freely up vand down thereon, carries the bag-holding loop E, composed of a at elastic band having its lower edge turned outward,forming theflange e. rlhe ends of the band are brought together and each are lapped against and fitted in recesses in the sides of the bracket, to which they areseeured in any desired manner.v Portions are removed from the lower edge of the band composing the bagholding loop forming the shoulders e on each side of the bracket, across which thel inner edge ofthe bag extends. There are a series of these shoulders e,so as to accommodate bags of d'erent widths.

The bag-retainer, composed of the hook F, having a series of teeth, f, and the spring f,or suitable elastic connection between the hook and bracket, is for catching over the inner edge of the bag, or that portion stretched between the two shoulders for supporting it. The coilholding loop by compressing the sides of the latter and fitting the bag over the flange and over` the appropriate shoulders thereof, the sides are released, and the loop, expanding, fills the mouth of the bag and holds it in position. The retainer is distended till one of its teeth catches over the edge of the bag stretched between the shoulders. When the bag is filled, the bag-holding loop is detached'by compressing. its sides and moving the bracket upward. The loop can be swung to one side and have another bag applied thereto while the bag previously filled is being removed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the bag-holding. loop provided with shoulders, of the bag-retainer for supporting that portion of the bag stretched between the shoulders, substantially asset forth.

2. The combination, with the bag-holding loop provided with shoulders, of the bag-retainer yieldingly supported between the shoul- 'ders and provided with a series of teeth, substantially as set forth.

3. The herein shown and described bagholding loop, composed of a flexible band provided with an outer flange and shoulders at its lower edge, substantially as specified.

4. The combination, with the plate having lugs near each end and the rod supported by the lugs, of the bracket loosely mounted upon the rod and free to turn and move up and down on said rod, the bag-holding loop carried by the bracket, and the spring mounted upon the rod and interposed between the upper lug and bracket, substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. The herein shown and described bag-holding device, composed of the plate having a lug at each end, the rod mounted in the lugs, the bracket adapted to turn and move up and down on said rod,the externally-flanged flexible bag- IOO holding loop provided with shoulders at its lower edge, the spring mounted upon the rod and located between the upper lug and tbe In testimony whereof I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
