Description

United States Patent [191 Shields [54] ADJUSTABLE DRAPERY SUPPORT WITH TWO MEANS OF VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT [76] Inventor: George Edward Shields, 4 Allyn Drive, Port Richey, Fla. 33568 [22] Filed:' Dec. 10, 1971 21 Appl. No.: 206,776
Primary Examiner-William l-l. Schultz Attorney-C. David Emhar dt [4 1 May l, 1973 ABSTRACT A fixture for supporting draperies which allows for horizontal and vertical adjustment of the draperies. A wall bracket mountable to a wall has a horizontally extending plate member which adjustably receives a horizontal leg of an intermediate plate. The intermediate plate has a vertically extending leg with a vertically extending slot. An outer plate has a horizontally extending slot through which in conjunction with the vertical slot of the intermediate member a fastening device extends securing the outer plate to the intermediate plate. The intermediate plate is adjustable along the length of the vertical leg and has an outer threaded cylindrical end which is in meshing engagement with a screw threaded vertical shaft. A U-shaped wall which receives the drapery rod has a stem de- 2 Cilaims, 2 Drawing Figures ADJUSTABLE DRAPERY SUPPORT WITH TWO MEANS OF VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION therefrom freely received by the hollow top end so the shaft may be rotated while the stem does not rotate but is carried vertically along with the shaft, and a second screw extending through the vertically extending slot of the intermediate plate and the horizontally extending slot of the outer plate, a nut threaded on the second screw securing the outer plate to the intermediate plate and being loosenable to allow the outer plate to be positioned at different locations from the top to the draperies positioned immediately above the floor, the
draperies must be lowered whenever shrinking occurs. Previous to my invention disclosed in the aforementioned patent, the drapery fixtures had'to be removed from the wall and repositioned in a lower location. My prior invention allows the user to simply rotate a threaded shaft thereby lowering the draperies.
Since the introduction of my previous drapery support invention, I have discovered that a relatively long threaded shaft is necessary in order to provide for the necessary amount of lowering. Of course, the longer the threaded shaft, the more obvious and unattractive the fixture. Thus, I have disclosed herein a fixture which has two means for lowering the draperies while telescoping the fixture so as to not be large and apparent. I
My previously mentioned fixture was designed primarily to receive relatively flat drapery rods and not cylindrical drapery rods. As a result, the fixture disclosed herein has been designed to receive both types of rods. In addition, ears have been provided at the top of the fixture to receive the drapery hanging pins so as to allow the drapery to wrap around the fixture thereby concealing the fixture.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION One embodiment of the present invention is a drapery hanging fixture for supporting a drapery'for adjustment vertically and horizontally continuously between relatively widely spaced limits comprising a wall bracket having an elongated vertical base member for attachment to a wall structure and a horizontally plate member formed integrally with the base member approximately midway between the ends thereof, the plate member has a vertical wall with a top horizontally projecting portion and a bottom horizontally projecting portion, an adjustable intermediate plate having a horizontally extending leg disposed adjacent the vertical wall forming an extension of the vertical wall and fitting snugly between the top portion and the bottom portion, the intermediate plate has a vertically extending leg integral with the horizontal leg with a vertically extending slot, a screw extending through the vertical wall of the wall bracket and the horizontal leg of the intermediate member, a nut threaded on the screw securing the horizontal leg to the vertical wall, an adjustable outer plate having an internally threaded outer cylindrical end and a horizontally extending slot, a screw threaded vertical shaft in meshing engagement with the outer cylindrical end and extending therethrough for adjustment in a vertical plane, said shaft having a hollow top end, a U-shaped wall opening upwardly for receiving a drapery rod and having a stem depending bottom of the vertically extending leg.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved adjustable drapery support.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an adjustable drapery support which allows for a relatively large amount of vertical adjustment of the draperies while providing a compact concealable drapery fixture.
Related objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING FIG. 1 is a side view of a drapery fixture incorporating the present invention.
FIG. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the portion of the fixture enclosed by circle number two of FIG. 1.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT For the purposes of promoting an understanding of the principles of the invention, reference will now be made to the embodiment illustrated in the drawing and specific language will be used to describe the same. It will nevertheless be understood that no limitation of the scope of the invention is thereby intended, such alterations and further modifications in the illustrated device, and such further applications of the principles of the invention as illustrated therein being contemplated as would normally occur to one skilled'in the art to which the invention relates.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown a drapery hanging fixture 10 for supporting a drapery for adjustment vertically and horizontally continuously between relatively widely spaced limits. Fixture 10 is shown mounted to wall 12 with the drapery and rod removed therefrom for sake of'clarity. Two fixtures 10 are required to support a single drapery rod with each fixture being positioned at the ends of the drapery rod. In many cases, an intermediate fixture would be located between the ends of the rod so as to prevent sagging of the rod due to the weight of the drapery.
I Fixture 10 has a wall bracket 11 with an elongated vertical base member 30 attached to wall 12 by screws 13. A horizontally extending plate member 31 is formed integrally with member 30 approximately midway between the ends of member 30. Plate member 31 has a vertical wall 32 with a top horizontally projecting portion 33 and a bottom horizontally projecting portion 34. An inverted L-shaped intermediate plate 14 is mounted to bracket 11. Intermediate plate 14 has a horizontally extending leg 35 disposed adjacent vertical wall 32 forming an extension of the vertical wall. Leg 35 fits snugly between portions 33 and 34 so as to prevent rotation of the leg with respect to fastening device 15. Plate 14 has a vertically extending leg 36 with a vertically extending slot 37 extending lengthwise along the leg with the central axis 23 of the leg.
Horizontal leg 35 is provided with a horizontally extending slot so as to allow adjustment of the intermediate member with respect to the wall bracket. ln addition, the wall bracket is provided with a pair of slots either of which will receive the fastening device 15. Thus, to move the draperies toward wall 12, device may be unloosened and the intermediate plate member may be moved towards the wall. The fastening device may then be tightened. The fastening device includes a screw which extends through the vertical wall of bracket 11 and through the horizontal leg of the intermediate member 14. A wing nut is then threaded on the screw securing the horizontal leg to the vertical wall.
An adjustable outer plate 16 has a horizontally extending slot 38 and an internally threaded outer cylindrical end 39. A fastening device 17 secures outer plate 16 to the intermediate plate 14. Fastening device 17 includes a screw extending through vertical slot 37 and horizontal slot 38 and a nut which is threaded on the screw so as to secure the outer plate to the intermediate plate. The wing nut may be loosened so as to allow the outer plate to be positioned at different locations from the top to the bottom of leg 36. Thus, fastening device 17 may be loosened and the outer plate may be moved in the direction of or opposite of arrow 24. Simultaneously, the outer plate may be moved in the direction of or opposite to arrow 26.
A screw threaded vertical shaft 18 is in meshing engagement with end 39 and extends through the end for adjustment of the draperies in a vertical plane. Shaft 18 has a hollow top end 27 which freely receives stem 28. A U-shaped wall 40 which opens upwardly for receiving a drapery rod has stem 28 depending therefrom. Stem 28 is of smaller diameter than the hollow interior 27 and thus, shaft 18 may be rotated while the stem 28 does not rotate but instead is carried vertically along with shaft 18. The drapery rod may be positioned within space 29 formed by the U-shaped wall 40. A knob is mounted to the bottom end of shaft 18 to allow for ease of rotating shaft 18.
To operate fixture 10, the wall bracket is mounted to the wall and plate 16 is positioned at the top of slot 37 as shown in FIG. 1. In addition, shaft 18 is threaded to its most upward position. Whenever it is desired to lower the drapery, shaft 18 may be rotated in the direction of arrow 22 so as to lower the drapery rod in the direction of arrow 21. Additional lowering of the drapery rod may be achieved by loosening fastening device 17 and moving outer plate 16 to the lower end of slot 37. Likewise, intermediate plate 14 may be moved either inward or outward with respect to the wall along axis of the vertical leg 35.
Ear 41 and ear 42 are provided each having a hole to receive a drapery hanging pin thereby allowing the drapery to wrap around the fixture for concealment purposes. Ear 41 has a drapery pin hole identical with the drapery pin hole shown for ear 42. Ear 41 extends vertically downward from the U-shaped wall 40 and is integrally attached thereto. Wall 19 is parallel with intermediate plate 14 and outer plate 16 and is integrally connected to U-shaped wall 40. Ear 42 extends downwardly from wall 19 being integrally attached thereto.
While the Invention has been illustrated and described in detail in the drawings and foregoing description, the same is to be considered as illustrative and not restrictive in character, it being understood that only the preferred embodiment has been shown and described and that all changes and modifications that come within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the claims are also desired to be protected.
