UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON SMITH, OF SMITHVILLE SOUTH, NEW YORK.
SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR ANCHORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,938, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed March 14, 1887. Serial No. 230,844.
To all whom. it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, N ELsoN SMITH,ofSmithville South, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Safety Attachment for Anchors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a safety attachment for anchors, and has for its object to provide a devicecapable of ready attachment to an ordinary anchor, whereby when the anchor is fixed in the bottom it cannot be detached by entanglement with the cable, and wherein the said anchor may be cat-headed in the usual manner without inconvenience.
The invention consists in pivoting a triangular frame to the shank of an anchor between the flukes, so constructed that it will guide the cable clear of the non-embedded fluke without regard to the position of the ship, as will be hereinafter more specifically set forth, and pointed out in the claims. I
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this'specification, in which the figure represents a perspective View of an anchor having my improvement applied thereto.
Vessels are often endangered when riding at anchor by the entanglement of the cable with the exposed fluke of the embedded anchor, which results in the detachment of said anchor and the consequent drifting of the vessel, whereupon serious damage may result before the cable can be cleared and another holding found. To overcome this objection a triangular frame, A, is pivoted'at its apex about centrally the shank A of the anchor, the base whereof is adapted to extend downward and reciprocate between the flukes a. The frame A is constructed of two triangular arms, B B, upon opposite sides of the shank, held at an inclination outward in opposite directions by a series of horizontal bars or plates, 0, as shown. Inner guide-bars, D, are also provided the frame, which bars are made integral with (No model.)
the triangular frame, are preferably made with a rounding surface, and the said base-bars extend at such a distance downward as to be under all conditions below the plane of the under side of the fiukes, and the frame is extended sufficiently at the base to permit the aforesaid base-bars to project beyond the un der edge of said flukes.
In operation, when the anchor is dropped and one fluke engages the bottom, the frame A is crowded by contact with said bottom over toward and in near engagement with the exposed fluke, as illustrated. In the event the cable should foul the anchor thus protected it will be impossible for an entanglementto result, as the cable can at no pointobtain a hold, but will engage either one bar, bb,or both, and be guided thereby over the fluke and freed.
- It will be observed that the attachment in no manner interferes with catting the anchor, as either fluke may be as readily caught by the cat-hook as in the old form of anchor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an anchor attachment, the combination, with the shank A and parallel triangular and outwardly-inclined arms BB, pivoted upon opposite sides of said shank between the iiukes a, of inner horizontal guide-bars, D D, integral with said arms, adapted to limit the outward inclination thereof, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In an anchor attachment, the combination, with the shank A of an anchor, ofa frame, A, pivoted at its'apex thereto, consisting of the parallel side arms, B B, adapted to extend downward between and below the flukes or, inner horizontal guide-bars, D D, integral with said side arms, and means for retaining the said arms atan inclination outward in opposite directions, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose herein set forth.
NELSON SMITH.
