- UNITED STATES I ATENT rrrcs,
JOSEPH O. SOHWVALLER, OF HALBUR, IONVA.
COMBINED TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,932, dated November 8, 1887 Application filed January 31, 1887. Serial No. 225,969. (No model.)
will enable others skilled in the art to which ,it
, fully described hereinafter, and
pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined tools; and it consists in, first, the combination of a jaw or handle having a hammer formed upon one end, and having a suit able recess formed through the hammer with a seeondjaw or handle, which has its shorter end made to extend into. the opening in the head, so as to form a means for catching hold of wires, staples, or other similar devices, which are to be drawn out of the wood into which they are driven; second, in the arrangement and combination of parts, as will be more pointed out .in the claims. I
' The object of my invention is to provide a tool which is especially intended for use in putting up wire fences, and in which a hammer, cutters for cutting the wire, and devices for catching hold of the wire and withdrawing staples, are combined together in asingle tool. v
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool embodying my invention, shown in section. Figs. 2 and 3- are edge views of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cutters, and Fig. 5 is a perspective of one of thejaws. A represents one of the handles -or jaws, which has an ordinary claw'haninier, B, formed upon its end. Through this hammer B is made asuitable opening, 0, as shown, in which the shorter end, D, of the other handle, F, opcrates. The second handle or jaw, F, corresponds in shape so far as its longer end is concerned, and the two jaws are made to separate when left free to move by means of a suitable spring, G. v
In order to prevent the jaws from opening when the tool is being used, a suitable link, H, is pivoted to the end of one of thejaws or levers, and which catches over the end of the the other handle or lever, so as to lock them together. The shorter end D of the handle or lever F is provided with asharp edge, I, upon one side, and which is made to enter a suitable distance into the recess formed by the two projections J upon the hammer B inside of the recesses O. The short end D of this sharp edge I, acting in connection with the sharpedges J, forms a means for catching hold of the ends of wires, staples, and other such devices as are to be either securely held orare to be drawn out of the wood into which they have been driven.
In one edge of the jaw or handle A are formed two suitable recesses, L, and in the edge of the corresponding part of the jaw or handle F is formed a recess, N, which corresponds thereto, the recessed part N coming between two recesses L, as shown. Projecting down through the head, and having its sharp edge to extend into this recess, isachisel, M, which is held rigidly in position by means of a set-screw, O, which bears against its side, and which chisel is fed forward by means of a set-screw, P. When it is desired to move the chisel forward, the screw 0 is loosened and the screw P tightened up, and then after the chisel has been given the desired adjustment the screw 0 is tightened into position again. In the side of the jaw F is made a suitable recess. In this recess a reversible blade or cutter, Q, is placed, which can have its cutting-edge reversed whenever the edge in connection with the chisel M becomes dull. The cutting'edge of this blade Q does not pass the edge of this chisel so as to produce a shearing action, but it advances toward the chisel to within any desired distance for the purpose of cutting the wires. In the opposite side of thejaw A there are made two other recesses, R, which are preferably made circular in shape, so as to be adapted to receive wires, and the jaw F has a recess, S, which corresponds with the recesses It. WVhcn the two jaws are closed, the recess in the jaw F moves so as tograsp the wire or other similar object, and thus hold it securely.
It will be seen from the above that when the jaws are fastened together by the clasp H the claw of the hammer is adapted for pulling nails and staples, and the hammer portion for driving nails, staples, and other such objects, the cutters to cut the wires, the short end D of the jaw F to catch hold of staples, the ends of wires, and other such objects, and the recesses R S to catch hold of the long wire, for the purpose of exerting a pull upon it. All the tools which are used in the making ofwire fences are here combined in a single tool, thereby saving the operator the time and trouble in changing from one tool to another when at work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In acombined tool, the combination ofthe handle A, having a hammer and claw formed upon one end and a recess formed through the hammer, and provided with a chisel, M, with the handle F, pivoted upon the one A, and having a short end, D, which extends up into the recess and is provided with a sharp edge, I, to operate in connection with the edges J, formed upon the hammer, and the blade Q, which is inserted in the handle and adapted to operate in connection with the chisel, substantially as shown.
2 v I11 a combined tool, the combination of a handle, A, having a hammer and claw formed upon one end, and a recess formed through the hammer, with the handle F, pivoted upon the one A, and having a short end, D, which extends up into the recess, and which is provided with the sharp edge I, and which operates in connection with the edges J, formed upon the hammer, the inner side of the hammerand the projection D serving to catch hold of articles, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH G. SCHNVALLER.
