Description
L. P. HARADON. GRAIN DISTRIBUTOR.
Patented Jan. 6, 1863.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
L. P. HARADON, OF INDEPENDENCE, IOWA'.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRAIN-D-ISTRIBUTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,291, dated January (i, 1863.
To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, L. P. HARADON, ot' Independence, in the county of Buchanan and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Grain-Distributing Device and I do hereby declare that the following. is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in
which- Figure 1 is `a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top 'view of' the same; Fig. 3', a detached sectional view of a portion ofthe same, taken inthe line w av, Fig'. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts inthe several figures.
This invention relates to `a new and improved device for distributing grain, chieily from elevators, into difterentbins in the upper part of a building, the parts being so arranged that the grain may be discharged into different bins by adjusting the parts from the lower part of the building, thereby vdispensin g with the services of a person in the grain loft or spout C of a hopper, into which vthe grain is vdischarged Afrom the elevators. 4 of the tube are attached to slides d Ad., which are fitted on the framing B, and allowed to work freely thereon, the slides being at the upper ends of the parts b c, the tube A and the upper part of the framing B having, an inclined position, as shown clearly in Fig. 1..
To the lower end of the lower part, c, ofthe tube A there is attached a box, (l, which is also allowed toslide freely on the framing B, This box Chas a slot or opening, c, made in its bottomat its lower end, and to the framing VB, at its lower part, there is attached a series of spouts, D, which lead to diiierent bins in the apartment in which the tube A is placed. To the slide d of the lower part, c, of the The parts b c L tube A there is att-ached a cord or chain, E,
which passes over a pulley, f, and thence down into the lower part of the building. The cord or chain E is attached at its lower end t0 a drum, F, on a shaft, G, the latter having a crank, H, at one end of it, and a ratchet, I, at the opposite end, into which a pawl, J, catches.
The ratchet I is simply a wheel provided at its periphery with notches g, at suoli a distance apartvthat when the shaft G is turned, and the ratchet I en gages with each notch, the
`opening ein the bottom of the boxlU will be brought over a spout, D'.
Tothe box G the/re is attached :a cord or chain, h, which extends over a pulley, t', at the upper end of an upright, j, and has a weight, K, at its lower end, said weight having a tendency tokeep the box G down to the lower part of the framing B, as will be fully understood by reference to Fig. l.
The hopper into which the grain is disV charged from the elevators is provided with two discharge-spouts, C C", and :a tube, a, connected with each. The spouts-G U incline downward from the hopper at the same degree of inclination from two opposite sides of the latter, and between the twosponts C C, at their junction with the hopper, there is placed a valve, L, which, by being turned or adjusted, may be made to cut off either spout from the hopper. lThis valve is adjusted by means of a lever, M, which ,is attached to one end of the axis of the valve L, and has a cord or chain,
N, secured tol one end of it, said cord or chain passing over a pulley, k, and 'then extending downto the lower partof the building. The lower end of the cord or chain is attached to a pulley, O, which has a loaded arm, P, connectedto it, said arm havinga' tendency to keep thefvalve L in proper' position to close thev spoutfC", iand keep the cord or chain N at a proper tension. When the valve L closes the spout C', the former is kept in proper poy. vsition by the lever M, which is loaded at the,
end ax` to' effect that result.
.. The operation is as follows :A When the box- -C 'isat they lower part of the' framing B, the
opening e' in the bottom of the box is in line with or directlyov'er the lowest spout D, and v the grain will be discharged into the bin with' which that spout communicates. bin is filled', or the desired amount of grain de-` posited into it, the attendant in thelowcr part of the building turns the shaft G until the paw-l J catches into a succeeding notch g of the ratchet l, and the box C is thereby drawn upward on the framing B, and the opening e brought in line with the next spout D above. Thus it will be seen that the box C may be drawn up in line with thc several spouts and all the bins filled, the part. c of the tube A. when fully drawn np, forcing 4up the part b over the stationary part a, and this adjustment of the parts c b is all done by a person at the lower part of 'the building, no attendant being required in the bin-loft.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim als new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The telescopic tube A, provided with the several spouts D, all arranged as 'and for the purpose specified. y
2. The valve L, in combination With the two vinclined spouts C C, and the cord or chain N, arranged with the pulley O, loaded arm P,
and the loaded lever M, as and for the pur.
vpose specified.
' L. P. HARADON.
