Description

(No Model.)
H. A. WALKER.
LAMP GALLERY.
No. 371,865. Patented Oct. 18, 18-873 UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE.
HENRY ALFORD WALKER, OF EPPING, COUNTY OF ESSEX, ASSIGNOR TO EVERED & COMPANY, (LIMITED,) OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
LAIVIP GALLERY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,865; dated October 18, 1887.
Application filed March 17, 1887. Serial No. 231,287. (No model.) Patented in England October 29, 1886, No.13,870, and in Germany April 2 1887, No. 1,727.
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HENRY ALFORD \VALK ER, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Bellevue Cottage, Epping, county of Essex, England, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in LampGalleries, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, dated October 29, 1886, No. 13,870, and Germany, dated April 28, 1887, No. K. p. 1,727,) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention has for its object the raising and lowering of lamp-galleries in order to facilitate the trimming of the wicks, the lighting of the lamp, and,if necessary, the refilling of the oil-reservoir through the burner-body part without removing or disturbing the globe, chimney, or other parts carried by or upon the said gallery; and my said invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents in side elevation, partly in vertical section, a lamp-burner embodying my improvements, in' which the shade-holder or gallery part is represented in its lowered or normal position. Fig. 2 represents the same with the shade-holder or gallery elevated from the burner-body, while Fig. 3 rep resents a horizontal section upon the dotted lines A B, Fig. 1; and Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent parts of the gallery-raising mechanism separately.
The same letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
a is the body of the burner, and b is the movable gallery or shade-holder carrying the burner part b".
c are the wick cases or tubes, and d is a system of jointed and connected bars, commonly known as lazy-tongs and havingfree and extended upper and lower ends,d (1 The upper ends are respectively jointed to the under side of the gallery and, with the joints d connected to the brackets b and with the joints 61* sliding within guide-slots of brackets I). Thelower endsareconnected, respectively, at d to the burner body and at d to a cross or coupling bar, 6. The joint of this last connection moves within a slot, 0
fis a screw, and g is a screw-hole or screw- 5 box in the burner-body and through which the said screw works. The inner end ,f of the screw swivels or turns within a hole in the middle of the coupling-bar 0, while f is the outer end or turn part of the said screw, by which the said screw is rotated for the raising and lowering of the'gallery.
By rotating the head or turn f 2 of the screw ffrom left to right the lower ends, d, of the jointed and connected bars 01 are pushed in 65 ward, or into the position as represented in Fig. 2, which turns the bars upon their center joints and increases the distancebetween the top and bottom parts, thereby raising the gallery vertically and keeping it in its raised or elevated position above the tops of the wicks or wick-cases for trimming or for lighting purposes.
To lower the gallery to its normal position, as represented in Fig. 1, rotate the head f in 7 5 the reverse direction, when thejointed system of bars are collapsed, and the gallery necessarily lowered by the lower ends, (2, being drawn outwardly by the reverse movement of the screw within the screw-box.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with alamp-burner and shade-holder, of a lazy-tongs or system of jointed levers connected to the burner and S5 shade-holder and provided with an operatingscrew, whereby the shade-holder will be raised above the lamp-burner by the movement of the screw, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a lamp burner and 0 gallery and a lazy-tongs pivotally connected to the under side of the gallery and the upper side of the burner, of a screw carried upon said burner-body and attached to said lazy- .tongs, whereby the movement of said screw 5 will open and close thelazy-tongaand by said movement raise and lower the lampgallery, as shown and described.
3. The combination, with the lamp-burner body a and gallery I), of a lazy-tongs, d, and Ice I screw f, all combined and operating as shown have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of and described. February, 1887.
4. The combination, with a lamp-burner body, a, and gallery or globe holder b,of lazy- HENRY ALFORD 5 tongs d, sorewf, screw-box g, and coupling- \Vitnesses:
bar e, substantially as shown and described. JAMES MORRIS,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I JAMES J. INGLIS.
