Abstract
A silencer having two similar opposed baffles, each frustoconical in shape, and each having its enlarged open end contiguous with the similar end of the other, and with the apex of the first baffle being adjacent the inlet end of the sound absorbing chamber in which the baffles are disposed.

No. 81,051, filed Oct. 15, 1970, now U.S. Pat. No. 3,672,465, issued June 27, 1972, and is directed to the species of FIG. 5 of that application as it was filed. The silencer hereof is a novel form of effective small size silencer particularly adapted for machine tools and the like and the principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel form of silencer, inexpensive and easy to assemble as well as to mount in place on an exhaust line.
A preferred embodiment of such silencer is shown in the appended drawing.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION The silencer herein disclosed comprises a cylindrical sound absorbing housing 46 closed at its inlet end by a closure plate 48 with a threaded opening 50 for attachment to an exhaust pipe of a machine tool or the like. Within the chamber 52 of the housing is a first baffle 56 of frustoconical shape and preferably of sintered bronze or the like with its rounded apex 57 adjacent the inlet 50 and with its enlarged open end, flanged at 58, adjacent a similar end, flanged at 66, of a second and similar baffle 64 with its apex 62 and adjacent side areas providing the outlet for the silencer.
A locking ring 68 holds flanges 58 and 66 in place against a locking shoulder 60 of the housing 46 and a sealing ring 70 seals the baffles to each other.
At 80 is shown a third bafile in the plane of the contiguous open ends of the first two baffles. Baffle 80 is of any suitable permeable material to enable gas flow through it from the interior of the first baffle to the interior of the second baffle from where the gas flow exits to atmosphere.
The housing is shown as having numerous fine slits 82 for assisting in sound reduction.
The interior chamber of the housing 46 is shown as empty; however it may be packed as loosely or as firmly as desired, with a permeable packing of sound absorbing material 54.
The construction herein disclosed has been found to be extremely effective in reducing noises due to exhaust gases in devices such as industrial tools and the like and as disclosed is extremely simple and inexpensive of manufacture and assembly, and mounting on an exhaust pipe.
An important feature of the present invention is the economy of manufacture, in part arising from the fact that baffles 56 and 64 are identically formed of sintered bronze, as by casting. It is regarded as equivalent that the material may be porous metal, plastics or ceramics.
Now having described the silencer herein disclosed, reference should be had to the claims which follow.
We claim:
1. A silencer comprising a double open end thick sound absorbing small diameter metal cylinder housing; one end of said housing having an inlet connected to a source of exhausted air; two sintered bronze baffles disposed within said housing adjacent said open ends;
with said baffles being op positely arranged truncated cones having their enlarge open ends contiguous; and
with one baffle having its apex adjacent said inlet; and with the other baffle having its apex projected through and extending outwardly of the other end of said housing, outletting to atmosphere; and a plate-like permeable third baffle disposed between and across the open ends of the first and second baffles; the housing and first two baffles being of such a thickness to diameter ratio as to be extremely resistant to vibrations, as would be the case if they were of thin sheet material.
Claims (1)
1. A silencer comprising a double open end thick sound absorbing small diameter metal cylinder housing; one end of said housing having an inlet connected to a source of exhausted air; two sintered bronze baffles disposed within said housing adjacent said open ends; with said baffles being oppositely arranged truncated cones having their enlarged open ends contiguous; and with one baffle having its apex adjacent said inlet; and with the other baffle having its apex projected through and extending outwardly of the other end of said housing, outletting to atmosphere; and a plate-like permeable third baffle disposed between and across the open ends of the first and second baffles; the housing and first two baffles being of such a thickness to diameter ratio as to be extremely resistant to vibrations, as would be the case if they were of thin sheet material.
