' T. F. W. SCHMIDT.
PAPER PACKAGE FASTENING.
No. 371,098.. Patented Oct. 4,1887.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, OF DAYTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF TO LAUBAOH & IDDINGS, OF SAME PLACE.
PAPER-PACKAGE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,098, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed July 23, 1887. Serial No. 245,107. lModel.)
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE F. W. SCHMIDT, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- ]?ackage Fastenings, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide improved fastening devices for holding the flaps or covers of paper packages in their closed position, with the parts constructed so that the fastening devices may be readily locked to hold the cover in position, or detached to open the package. The fastening devices also furnish suitable means for lifting and carrying the package, all of which will be more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improveinent, showing the bails detached and flap-covers open. Fig. 2 is a top'plan view of the same, showing thepackage closed and the bails locked. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of a modification of Fig. 2.
1 represents an ordinary threecornered paper package.
2 represents the flap-covers, and 8 addi tional inside flapcovers. These flapcovers are formed by goring out the upper portions of the sides 7, leaving a series of extended portions, 8, which, when bent inward, as shown in Fig. 1, meet and close the package. In said figure I have shown three of these flap covers to each side 7. The sides 7 are in one piece, and are folded to efi'ect three plies, through which pass the fasteners 4. I have shown this form of package to illustrate the use of my improvement; but the shape and manner of folding the package are not of my present invention 4 represents bails attached to the package on each side, as shown.
5 represents a catch formed on one of the bails, adapted to receive and hold the oppo- I5 site bail, which engages therein, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The loops of these bails are made short, so as to lie down upon the flaps or folds 2 when they are looked, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These bails therefore serve as braces to prevent the sides of the box from spreading apart, as well as to press the flaps or folds down, keeping the package securely closed and fastened. These locking-bails are much more convenient and stronger than strings.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the bails are shown as applied to the sides 6 of the box, instead of the sides 7, as shown in Fig. 2, and
are locked in the same manner over the cen- 6o ter of the package.
Having described my invention, what I claim is p 1. In combination with a paper package, two bails attached to the side of the package, and oneof which has the lock-loop 5, to receive the opposite bail and hold the package in a closed position, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a paper package formed of folded sides and having flaps 2, the hails 4, attached to the package upon either side of the center, one being provided with a loop, 5, for locking the bails together upon the center, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
THEODORE F. NV. SCHMIDT.
