CHARLES E. T. HENDRIOKSON, OF FREDERICK, MARYLAND.
ADJUSTABLE swm'o.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,065, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed June 10, 1887.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. T. HEN- DRIOKSON, of Frederick, in the county of Frederick and State of Maryland have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Adj ustable Swings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in adjustable swings, the object of the same being to provide a swing which may be adjusted into various positions at pleasure, from reclining to upright. A further object is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction and durable and efiicient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the swing in the adjustment of a cot. Fig. 2 is a perspective View showing the swing as a chair. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the swing, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view on linear a; of Fig. 3.
A is a horizontal bar, representing the head or top of the swing, and is provided with the central enlargement, B, adapted to receive the canvas 0. The ends of the bar are cut away, in order to receive the rods D and the braces E, said rods and braces having suitable holes, whereby they may move freely thereon. Between said braces and rods are located suitable washers, w, as shown. The rods D' are provided near their lower ends with suitable perforations adapting them to move upon the rounded ends of the bar F, the latter being connected with a similar bar, G, by means of the rods H, movably secured thereon.
To the bar H are movably secured the rods I, the opposite ends thereof being mounted upon the ends of the bar J, the central part of which latter is enlarged to receive the lower end of the canvas 0. The rods and braces are retained in place upon the bars by means of the pins K or other suitable devices.
Serial No. 240,881. (No model.)
Upon the ends of the bar J are mounted the adjusting-braces L, provided near their free ends with the dovetail slots a and b, which may be two or more in number, as practice may warrant in furnishing various adjustments to the swing. The free ends of the braces E are provided with similar slots, 0 and d. The slots of the braces L engage the ends.
of the bar F, and the slots of the bar Eengage the ends of the bar G. Guide-posts O are placed upon the bar F to guide the brace E. The braces E are secured within the guide staples P on the bar G.
The lower ends of the ropes Q, by means of which the swing is suspended, are attached to suitable staples, R, fastened in the rods H near each end thereof. The opposite ends of the ropes are attached to rings, from which the swing may be suspended.
When it is desired to change the position of the swing from that shown in Fig. 1. to the position shown in Fig. 2, the braces E are moved upon the bar G from the slots 0 to the slots d, and the braces L are changed from the slots a to the slots 1). By increasing the number of slots the positions which the swing can assume will increase. The advantages of the dovetail slots in this connection are such as to prevent any voluntary disarrangement of the parts.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an adjustable swing, the combination, with the bars A and J, having a flexible seat secured thereto, intermediate bars, F and G, and movable connecting-rods, of braces secured to the bars A and J, provided with notches adapted to engage the bars F and G, and ropes or chains secured to one of the bars for suspending the swing, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHAS. B. T. HENDRIGKSON.
