L. J. HOLT. .PIB SAFB'OB REPRIGERATOR.
No. 370,945. Patented Qot. 4.1887.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUCY JANE HoLr, or nENroN, rrEXA's.
PIE SAFE OR REFRIGERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 370,945, dated October 4, 1887.
Application liled June 9, 1887. Serial No. 240,835.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, LUCY JANE HoLT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denton, in the county of Dentonand State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Pie Safes or Refrigerators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved pie safe or refrigerator, and has for its object to provide a light portable device which will lbe especially adapted for use on picnics, camping-out parties, 8vo.
The invention `consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lisa front view of the safe. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section on the line 0a or of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line .e z, Fig. 1, but with the door closed.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates the body of the safe, comprising a box having a door, B, and C C represent vertical rods passing up through the interior of the said body, near the corners, and extending through the top of said body to form the loops c c, to the centers of which are secured the ends of the bail or handle D.
E E represent strips or bars secured at the ends to intermediate points of the said vertical rods, Iand G G represent movable shelves, preferably skeleton in form, comprising Vthe front and rear strips,H H, notches being formed in the ends to receive and slide on the rods C, and the side strips, I, secured at the ends to the said front and rear strips.
K K represent coiled springs secured at the lower ends to the upper sides of the strips E, at front and rear of the safe, and secured at the upper ends to the under sides of the strips HH, and adapted to normally hold the shelves pressed upwardly.
The pie-plates .are placed on the movable shelves, they being previously depressed, and the springs under the said shelves clamp the plates between the same and the bars or strips E above, thus holding the pie plates from movement.
(No model.)
I am aware that spring-actuated movable shelves or partitions are not new, and therefore do not claim them broadly; but I am not aware that shelves constructed, as herein described, in connection with the stationary strips or stops, so disposed as to cause the pieplate placed on the said shelf to be clamped between the same and the strips or stops above, have been heretoforel used.
Having thus described the construct-ion and operation of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A pie-safe comprising the portable body A, the vertical guide'rods C, secured therein, near the corners thereof, the cross bars secured to said guide-rods, and the spring-actuated shelves mounted on said cross-bars, substantially as described. l
2. A pie-safe comprising the body A, vertical guide-rods C therein, stationary strips E secured at the ends thereto, movable shelves G, comprising the front and rear strips, H, notched at the ends to slide on the rods C, and the side strips, I, secured to the strips H, and the springs K under the movable shelves to force them upwardly to clamp a pie plate against the under side of the stationary strips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The improved portable pie'safe, herein described and shown, comprising the body A, the guide-rods C C, arranged vertically in the said body, near the corners thereof, and eX- tended through the top of the same to form the loops c c, the bail or handle D, secured to said loops, the cross-bars secured to said guide-rods,
and the spring-actuated shelves mounted on the said cross-bars, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LUCY JANE EoLT.
