Abstract

The pre-made buttonhole finish is a piece of fabric that is cut in a specific form with an iron-on adhesive along the edges of one side of the fabric, and a sewing guide line marked near the center of it forming a one piece buttonhole binding. This application is then sewn on the desired place of a finished garment; then after cutting the garment along the slit in the center of the pre-made buttonhole finish the two side edges are folded towards the center and ironed on. The top and bottom edges then folded towards the center, tucked into the slit, pulled out from the back of the garment and then ironed on flat in place forming the bound buttonhole therein.

INVENTOR GMAMW PRE-MADE BUTTONIIOLE FINISH, A NEW TYPE OF BOUND BUTTONHOLE The present invention relates to a bound buttonhole and to the method of making same by the use of a one piece buttonhole binding that is quickly sewn and ironed on to a garment, thus saving much time and trouble normally associated with bound buttonholes.
Prior to this invention bound buttonholes as formed in garments and articles of apparel have been made by the application of materials to the edges of the buttonhole slits; this required a skill in cutting and then machine and hand sewing them. Although this method is successful, its time consuming procedures have proven it to be costly.
The present invention defines a unique method of forming a bound buttonhole and in particular provides a one piece buttonhole binding which is made or manufactured beforehand, appropriately called a pre-made buttonhole finish which is the basis of this invention.
Accordingly, it is the object of the present invention to provide a faster and easier way to construct a bound buttonhole in an article of apparel by the use of the premade buttonhole finish.
Another object of the invention is to provide a decorative bound buttonhole as well as a useful one.
Other objects, features and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description thereof proceeds when considered in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings which illustrate the best mode presently contemplated for carrying out the present invention:
FIG. 1 is a plan view of the pre-made buttonhole. finish, showing the iron-on adhesive and the marked sewing guide line;
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the pre-made buttonhole finish sewn to a portion of an article with one side edge folded at the sewing line towards the centerand ironed on;
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the pre-made buttonhole finish sewn to a portion of an article with the top edge folded at the sewing line towards the center and tucked into the buttonhole slit after both side edges were folded and ironed on;
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the back of FIG. 3 with the top edge pulled out and ironed on in place;
FIG. 5 is a plan view of a portion of an article in which the completed buttonhole of the present invention is formed;
FIG. 6 is a plan view of the back of FIG. 5; and
FIG. 7 is a sectional view of the buttonhole taken along line 7-7 of FIG. 5.
Referring now to the drawings and particularly to FIG. 1, the pre-made buttonhole finish. It is understood that the pre-rnade buttonhole finish generally indicated at 14 is a one piece buttonhole binding that is made of a fine but medium weight, very tightly woven fiber, preferably cotton. It is also understood that the iron-on adhesive which is placed on one side of the fabric and is indicated at 16, 18, 20, and 22 can be of a polymeric composition, or any other suitable iron-on adhesive may be employed in the construction of the pre-made buttonhole finish, provided that the characteristics thereof are sufficient to satisfy the requirements for the adherence of the pre-made buttonhole finish to the garment or article of apparel. Also understood is that the marked sewing guide line 24, is lightly printed on the pre-made buttonhole finish with dressmakers chalk or pencil or any other suitable printing ink that is not absorbed by the fabric. Insofar as the article in which the buttonhole is adapted to be formed is concerned, it is understood that the buttonhole may be formed in any garment or article of smooth texture in which a bound buttonhole is usually formed.
As illustrated in FIG. 2 through 7, a garment or article of apparel is generally indicated at 26 and includes the usual two layers of material normally associated with the buttonhole area, the first layer of material or the outside of the garment 28 and the second layer of material or the facing side of the garment or article 30. However, other layers of material such as interfacings can also be employed. The pre-made buttonhole finish 14 which has been made or manufactured prior to its use is then placed on the outside area of the garment or article of apparel 28, where a buttonhole construction is to be formed with the adhesive and marked sewing guide line side up. The pre-made buttonhole finish 14 is then pinned and basted to the garment or article 26 which includes both layers of material 28 and 30. It is then machine sewn to the garment or article 26 along the marked sewing guide line 24, after which the basting is then removed. A cut is then made in the garment or article 26 following the center slit of the pre-made buttonhole finish 36. The garment or article 26 is then turned over to the facing side 30, and the slit is then extended to the machine sewn stitches 38 in'the garment only 26, which includes 28 and 30. The garment 26 is then turned again to the outside 28, and the two side edges of the pre-made buttonhole finish 32and 34 are then folded towards the center at the sewing line 24 and then ironed on in place. The iron used in this connection must be a dry iron and the temperature or setting at which the iron is heated is dependent upon the type of fabric that is employed in the layers of material 28 and 30 and further is controlled by the characteristics of the iron-on adhesive 16, 18, 20 and 22. Furthermore, when ironing sufficient pressure must be applied on the iron while slowly moving it over the area until the adherence is complete. Finally, the top and bottom edges of the pre-made buttonhole finish 40 and 42 are then folded towards the center at the sewing line 24 and then the portions with the iron-on adhesive 16 and 20 are tucked into the buttonhole slit 36. The garment or article 26 is then turned over to the facing side 30 and the wing like portions with the iron-on adhesive of the top and bottom edges 40 and 42 are ironed on in place as illustrated in FIG. 6.
Since the pre-made buttonhole finish 1 4 which forms the completed bound buttonhole is illustrated in FIG. 5 can be of a different color from the'garment or article of apparel in which it is used, it can also be a decorative buttonhole and further enhance the garments appearance.
While there is shown and described herein certain specific structures and textures embodying'the invention, it will be manifest to those skilled in the art that various modifications and rearrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the underlying inventive concept and that the same is not limited to the particular form herein shown and described.
