Will/am E Edwards ROLL GATE LATCH This invention relates generally to gate latches.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch for a roll gate.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved latch for a roll gate having advantages over conventional latches presently used for roll gates and wherein the advantages are constructional as well as operative.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a roll gate latch which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will be readily evident upon a study of the following specification together with the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a side elevation view of the present invention shown securing a roll gate to a fence post; and
FIG. 2 is an enlarged top plan view thereof:
Referring now to the drawings in detail, there is shown a roll gate latch assembly, according to the present invention. a
This assembly is comprised of the following itemized components:
1 Latch 9 Lock nut bolt 2 Latch pin 10 Lock ring 3 Spacer 11 Spring 4 Rivet l2 Pad lock 5 Bushings 13 Fixed post 6 Lock arm 14 Opening for pad lock 7 Handles 15 Gate pipe 8 Bolt nut 16 Welded washer 17 Welding l8 Washer As shown in the drawings, the latch pin 2 is secured transversely through the fixed post 13 which is normally used for supporting the fence wire such asis illustrated in FIG. 1. The latch pin protrudes outward from each opposite end of the fixed post, bushings 5 having been provided in the fixed post through which the latch pin extends. A lock ring pin is provided on the latch pin adjacent one side of the fixed post while a welded washer 16 on the latch pin adjacent the opposite outer side of the fixed post 13. The same extending side of the latch pin has a second welded washer 16 secured thereto a spaced distance away so to provide space for one of the notched ends of the latch 1. The terminal end of this same side of the latch pin 2 is provided with an enlarged head, and a lock arm 6 is secured pivotally free therebetween, the lock arm six being provided with an opening at its opposite end for purpose of receiving the pad lock 12.
The latch 1 comprises a separate unit carried upon the vertical gate pipe 15 of a roll gate and which accordingly is disengagably engageable with the latch pin 2 secured stationarily upon the fixed post 13. The latch l as is evident comprises a pair of configurated levers which are secured together by means of a welding 17, each of the levers being positioned upon opposite sides of the gate pipe 15 and supported pivotally free thereupon by means of a transverse extending rivet 4 extending through the gate pipe, the rivet 4 extending through appropriate bushings 5 fitted in openings on the transverse opposite sides of the gate pipe 15.
One end of the levers of the latch 1 are each provided with a handle 7 that is secured thereto by means of welding 17. The opposite ends of the levers are each provided with a downwardly extending notch into which the opposite ends of the latch pin 2 is receivable when the latch l is pivoted so that the notches are brought upwardly against the under side of the latch pin which thus becomes secured within the'notches.
It is to be noted that one of the latch lever ends is provided with an opening 14 therethrough which is in alignment with an openingin the outer end of the lock arm 6 so that the pad lock can be fitted through both of the openings, thus securing the latch in a locked position.
As shown in FIG. 2 of the drawing, a bolt 8 extends transversely through the levers of latch l, the bolt supporting a pair of spacers 3 between which there is a groove for a spring 11. The bolt is secured by a bolt nut 8 at one end. The bolt nut 8 is adjacent a washer 18 positioned adjacent the outer side of one of the latch levers as shown.
A lock nut bolt 9 secured to one of the levers of the latch as shown.
It is to be noted that the spring 11 extends downwardly and its lower end is secured to one of the fixed and stationary clamps fitted around the gate pipe 15, the spring 11 accordingly serving to normally urge the latch to remain in a locked position with the latch pin due to tension action of the spring 1 1.
Thus there is provided a novel roll gate latch.
What I now claim is:
1. In a roll gate latch, the combination of a latch pin. stationarily secured to a fixed fence post and a pivotable latch unit carried on a vertical gate pipe of a roll gate, said latch unit being selectively engageable and disengagable with said latch pin, said latch pin comprising a horizontal pin extending laterally through said fixed fence post, said post being provided with bushings through which said latch pin extends, opposite ends of said latch pin extending outwardly of said fixed fence post, each of said ends being adaptable for engaging said latch unit, and one of said ends having a lock arm secured thereto, the outer end of said lock arm being provided with an opening therethrough for receiving a pad lock.
2. The combination as set forth in claim 1, wherein said latch unit comprises a pair of levers welded together, said levers being positioned upon opposite sides of a gate pipe of said roll gate and pivotable about a horizontal rivet extending therethrough, one end of said levers being provided with a handle, and the opposite end of said levers each being provided with an upward extending notch for engaging said latch pin.
3. The combination as set forth in claim 2, wherein a transverse bolt through said levers is attached to one end of a tension coil spring which at its other end is secured to a stationary part of said roll gate, said spring normally urging said latch unit in a lock position with said latch pin.
4. The combination as set forth in claim 3, wherein one of said levers near its notched end has a transverse opening for receiving said pad lock attached to said lock arm.

Claims (4)
