SAMUEL J. BINGHAIII, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO IVILLIAllI 'W. CLARK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ANTl-RATTLER F OR THILL- COUPLINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,428, dated September 6, 1887.
Application filed March 26, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. BINGHAM, of Binghamtomin the county ofBroome and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Anti-Rattlers for Thill- Couplings, of which the following is a descrip tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forn'iing a partof this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of a thill-coupling with my improved anti-rattler applied thereto, the axle, a portion of the aXle-clip, and coupling-bolt being in transverse section. Fig. 2 is a detached view in perspective ofniy improved anti-rattler as the same appears when ready for use, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view thereof.
Similar reference-letters in the various figures designate like parts.
My invention has for its objectto provide a cheap, simple, and durable device for the prevention of rattling in thin-couplings; to which end said invention consists in so inclosing the usual rubber compression-block and combining it with other elements as that it may be protected from contact with oil and other things injurious thereto, as well as from frictional contact with the shaft-eye, while it may be given an expansion onlyiu the direction in which its pressure is required to be exerted. Moreover, I desire to provide a durable friet-ion-surface for engagement with the shaft-eye, to which surface oil may be applied, when desired,to prevent cutting. I accomplish said objects in the following manner:
In the drawings, Arepresents a vehicleaxie, to which is attached in any well-known way the usual clip, B.
C represents an ordinary shaft having a shaft-eye, C',loosely coupled to the eye of the clip by means of the shaftbolt D.
Between the shaft-eye and the face of the clip is interposed my improved anti -rattler, of which E constitutes the case. Said case is formed from cast or malleable iron or other suit-able metal, and is provided with a concave Serial No. 232,476. (No model.)
face upon its front adapted to conform to the curvedsurfaceoftheshafteye. W'i thin theback of said case or block is formed asuitable cavity, E", within which is inserted a rubber or other elastic compression-block, F. A metal plate, G, is inserted within the cavity E upon one side of said con1prcssion-bloek, which serves to form a bearing for the end of a set-screw, H, by which the block G may be compressed. Upon placing said device in position, as shown in Fig. I, and turning the screw Hagainst the plate G,the block F is compressed; but, being prevented from lateral movement by the walls of the case E, it presses against the face of the clip and throws the case E forward against the shafteye. Thus it will be seen that the block is protected from contact with oil and other substances which tend to dissolve or injure it, while a permanent and durable frictionsurface is provided for the SIIZLIUBYB. Moreover, oil may be applied to said surface when needed, which is not practicable with the devices heretofore employed.
I am aware that it is old to extend the yoke of the axle-clip forward beneath the shaft-eye to form a support for a wedge-block between which and said shafteye is inserted a metalfaced compressionblock adapted to be compressed by means of a set-screw placed in the yoke. I am likewise aware that it is not new to place a compression-block in a metallic casing covering the top, bottom, sides, and back thereof, while a follower and set-screw is en1- ployed to compress the curved face of the block against the thill-eye; but I expressly disclaim both of said constructions.
\Vhat I do claim, however, is
The combination, with the cast-metal case or box IE, having posterior cavity, Efland concave face E, of the block F, plate G, and set-screw H, when arranged and constructed as described, for the purposes specified.
SAMUEL J. BINGHAM.
