To 'all whom tmc/,y concern.: Be it known that I, JACOB PATTERSON, of Monroe, in the county of Orange and Stateof New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pistons for Pumpsyand I do hereby declare that the following 'is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ofi-this specification, in whichl Figure l is a Vertical section ofmy invention, taken in tho l-inefx-gx, Fig. 2; Fig.f2, a horizontal section of the same, taken'in the line y gy, Fig. l. .Y

This invention relates to an improvement in the packing of the piston, whereby the lat' ter may alwaysbe kept in proper working Order. f

To enable those'skilled `in the art to fully yinvention, Iy will proceed to 4describe it.

A represents a hollow cylinder, which may' shoulder, a., near its upper part.

B is a collar or sleeve,- which is fitted on the cylinder A below the shoulder c. This the cylinder A, and its lower nd is provided with arins b, and a central ring, c, through which a rod, O, passes, the' lower end oi' the a nut, D, is fitted, as shown clearly in Fig. 1.

F represents a packing of annular form, and fitted o n the cylinderA between the shoulder a andthe collar or sleeve B. This packing is of india-rubber, and is made to t snugly in the pu1npcylinder, so as to produce the necessary/vacuum in the pump-cylinder as the cylinder A is raised. E

packing F being compressed between the shoulder a and the collar or sleeve. Thus'by this very simple arrangement the packing may always be kept in perfect working order by Vsimply turning Orscrewing up thenut D whenf ever the packing is worn so as to work loosely in the purnpcylinder. The piston is attached to the rod C, and theinvention is applicable to all pumps.
