SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,983, dated August 30, 1887.

This invention has relation to that class of oil or gasoline cans that are provided with pumps, and. among the objects of the invention are to construct a can of this class that is cheap and safe, and the pump of which is capable of being withdrawn wholly from the -can for cleansing, filling, and other purposes,
and which by its construction is capable of discharging the liquid contained therein into any suitable receptacle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, andv thev novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a central vertical section of an oil or gasoline can constructed in accordance with my invention, and provided with my improved pump. In carrying my invention into practice I use any can, A, of ordinary construction and provide the same with a vent, A', slot A2, and a swinging pivoted gate, A3, to close said vent, and with a knob projecting through the slot for manipulating the gate. An opening, A4, is formed in the top or head of the can, which is provided with an inwardly-project.- ing screw threaded flange or bushing, A5, through which the barrel B, containing the pump, is adapted to `pass, the lower end of the barrel being seated in a seat, A, having perforations A7. A cover, B', is tightly secured to the barrel B, the top of which is iiared and formed with screw-threaded openings B'l B, having perforated screw-caps mounted thereon, the lower end of the cover being screwthreaded and adapted to take into the threads of the bushing Al", by which means the barrel is heldin place. A diaphragm, Br, is secured in and near the upper end of the barrel, and a diaphragm, BW, is secured near and in the lower end of the barrel,` and these serve to close said ends liquid and air tight and to maintain the tubes in position. An opening, Bi, is formed in the barrel above the diaphragm Bi to permit any drippings of oil which may collect upon the upper surface ofthe diaphragm to run back into the can through the opening B,
Within the barrel are the tubes C, D, and E, the first mentioned being provided with the discharge-pipe O,vertically movable therein, and having at its lower end aV packing, C2, whereby when not in use it may be forced down out of the way, and thereby incapable of discharging liquid received into the tube through the opening C3 thereof by reason of said packinggand the lower end of the discharge-pipe being below said opening. The tube D is provided with an upwardly-opening valve, D', communicating with the interior of the barrel, and with a pipe, D2, communicating with the tube or cylinder E, which is open at its lower end and provided with an upwardly-opening valve, E. Within the tube or cylinder E is mounted the piston E2, the rod of which projects through the perforated cap B3 and is provided' with a handle or knob for reciprocating the same.
i The operation is as follows: Taking the piston in theposition shown, an upstroke of the same will create avacuum below it in the tube E, causing the valve E to lift and permit the liquid to pass therein. The tubeEbeing filled a downstroke of the piston closes the valve E and forces the liquid into the cylinder D through the branch D2 and up into the barrel B. By repeating this operation the barrel becomes filled, except at its upper end above, about the line X,which portion contains compressed air,which tends to produce a steady iiow from the discharge-pipe while the piston E2 is being reciprocated. Subsequent reciprocation of the piston forces the liquid in the barrel through the discharge-pipe C and out into any receptacle. When the receptacle is filled -the pumping operation ceases and the discharge-tube is pushed down.
Having described my invention,what I claim is v IOO 1. The Combination of the barrel B, having the diaphragme B* and B21", the pumpE E E2, the tubes O D D'Z, tube D having,` the valve D', and tube C having the opening C, and a discharge-pipe teleseopieally mounted in the tube C, substantially as specified.
2. The Combination of the barrel B, a pump arranged therein, the tube O, having the opening C3, and the discharge-pipe O', adapted to snugly fit and reciprocate Within the tube C, substantially as speeied.
3. The combination of the barrel B, having the screw-threaded cover B, adapted to fit the bushing of a can, and having the diaphragm Band openings B* B, the screw-threaded caps x 5 B* B, a pump, and a discharge-pipe, substantially as speced.
4. The COmbinatiOmWith thebarrel B, screwthreaded cover B', caps B4 B5, tubes C D E, piston Evaives E D', connecting-pipeD, and zo discharge-pipe C', substantially as specified.
