R. W.-,TROTTER.
NAIL SET. No. 368,795. PatentSdAug. 23, 1887.
WITNESSES: INVENTORE I?! v BY .llw Z K,
ATTORNEYS.
NITED STATES PATENT Orrin NAIL SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 368,795, dated August 23, 1887.
Application filed April 22, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD WV. TROTTER, of Great Neck, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Sets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in a sectionally-constructed nail set or nail-set and punch combined, adapted to act upon variously-sized nails, varying in size from spikes to brads, for instance, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a partly-sectional longitudinal view of a nail-set embodying my in vention, with punch-tip attached. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same upon the line a; a: of Fig. 1, looking toward the head of the tool. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of one of the thimble-like sections of the tool detached, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of a punch-tip attachment detached.
The improved nail-set is made tapering from its head downward, and preferably of octagonal or polygonal shape in transverse section throughout its length, excepting when the tool is to be used as a metal-punch for punching round holes, when a punch-tip which is conical and pointed or sharp is attached.
. The upper or stock part, A, of the tool is solid or entire, while its lower part is of sectional construction, being composed mainly of any number of thimble like extensions, B, each succeeding one smaller than the other transversely. These thimbles or thimble-like extensions B are of socketed construction on their upper ends and provided with an internal screw-thread, and are constructed on their lower ends, as is also the stock part 13, each with a nail-setting shank, b, having a screw-thread, 'c, on its exterior to fit the screwthreaded sockets of the thimbles. Each succeeding shankv b is of smaller cross dimensions than the shank b above it, and the face end of each shank is roughened, as shown in Fig. 2. This construction provides for adapting the nail-set to variously-sized nails. Thus all the thimbles 13 might be detached and the largest-sized shank b at the bottom of the nail-set required, the lowermost one of all Serial No. 235,777. (No modeLl stock part A be used for setting or driving home very large nails or spikes, or any nam 5 5 her of the different-sized thimbles B be screwed to their places -one on the shank b of the other and the upper one on the shank b of the stock part A, according to the diminished size of having a nail-setting shank, b, of sufiiciently small dimensions to adapt the tool to setting or driving home very small nails or brads. A great convenience will thus be afforded by making the one tool or nail-set answer for several nail-setting tools of different sizes.
The lowermost section of all I make rounded or conical and pointed, in the form of a punchtip, 0, adapted to screw onto the lowermost shank 12, whereby the nail-set may be used as a metal-punch applicable to the punching of round holes, thus combining two different kinds of tools in the one.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A nail-set composed of an upper or stock part and a series of lower detachable thimbles of diminishing sizes adapted to engage with each other and provided with a corresponding series of differentsized shanks at their lower ends adapted to set nails of diiferent sizes, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the upper or stock part, A, having a nail-setting shank, 1), provided with an exterior screw-thread, o, of a series of tapering thimble-like extensions, B, also provided with nailsetting screw-threaded shanks b, of diminishing sizes in succession transversely, and adapted each to fit a screwthread in the thimble like extension B of the next succeeding smaller size, essentially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with asectionally-com structed nail-set composed of an upper stock part, A, and a series of detachable differentsizedthimble-like extensions, 13, each provided with a nail setting and engaging shank, b, of the conical or pointed detachable punch-tip G, the whole forming a varying-sized nail-set and [CO metal-punch combined, as set forth.
RICHARD \V. TROTTER.
