A mould of a metal continuous casting machine provided with a system for supplying and withdrawing a cooling fluid flowing along ducts disposed in the mould walls, the ducts being interconnected serially at least in pairs.

Molds for a continuous casting machine are generally known, such molds being provided with ducts for a cooling fluid and the ducts being disposed in the mold walls and connected with a system for supplying and withdrawing the cooling fluid. In the upper and lower portions of such molds the ducts are united by closed circular manifolds. The cooling fluid is supplied through the lower manifold, and withdrawn from the upper one. Therefore, in this known type of mold, the cooling fluid flows in each duct in one direction, and then flows into the manifold, wherefrom it is withdrawn. This characteristic is responsible for a substantial consumption of the cooling fluid and makes its use less efiicient.
An object of the present invention is to eliminate the aforenoted disadvantage.
A principle object of the present invention is to provide a mold for a continuous metal casting machine and ducts for the cooling fluid connected in such a way that it is possible to efficiently use the cooling fluid and reduce its consumption. This object is achieved by interconnecting serially at least two ducts in pairs for the cooling fluid in the mold of the metal casting machine. It is preferred that a number of ducts be united into banks, the banks being interconnected so that the cooling fluid of one of the banks flows downwards whereas, in the other bank, it flows upwards.
One bank of the ducts may be isolated from the other bank in the upper portion and communicated with it in the lower portion.
Such an intercommunication of the ducts or their banks in the mold while providing for a passage of the cooling fluid consecutively in the ducts, makes it possible to bring down the amount of fluid to be supplied to the mold and to use the fluid more efficiently.
To uniformly cool the mold, the banks of the ducts may be disposed along the mold perimeter symmetrically with respect to the vertical planes of symmetry.
The nature of the present invention will become more fully apparent from a consideration of the following description of an exemplary embodiment of the present invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing in which the sole figure shows diagrammatically a general view of the mold.
The mold walls are provided with ducts 1 that receive a fluid for cooling the mold walls during the metal casting. In the upper portion of the mold, ducts 1 are arranged in banks 2, 2, 3 and 3by means of manifolds 4 and 4. Connected to manifolds 4 and 4are branch pipes 5 and 5 for supplying the cooling fluid which, after passing through the mold, is drained through branch pipes 6 (the supply and withdrawal of the cooling fluid are shown by arrows).
In the lower portion of the mold, ducts l are also interconnected with the help of manifolds 7 and 7 owing to which fact banks 2 and 2 will become connected serially to banks 3 and 3. The flow of the cooling fluid passes in the opposite direction in said banks 2 and 2, and also 3 and 3.
Thus the walls of the mold are cooled in the follow- Ll5e "allli "it"ial%s rli r33llfni 52 5 35%31 travels down ducts l and banks 2 and 2; then it flows into manifolds 7 and 7wherefrom it rises up in ducts l of banks 3 and 3 and is drained through branch pipes 6 disposed along the wider mold faces.
In the said exarnplary embodiment, provision is made for uniformly cooling the mold walls, since the banks of ducts 2 and 2 and also 3 and 3 are disposed along the perimeter of the mold symmetrically with respect to the vertical planes of symmetry.
Furthermore, owing to the fact that banks 2 and 2 and 3 and 3 are serially interconnected, this allows the amount of the cooling fluid required for cooling the mold walls to be considerably decreased.
What is claimed is:
l. A mold fora continuous metal casting machine comprising a plurality of walls connected to define a vertical opening adapted to accommodate metal casting, and, in at least one of said walls, spaced parallel rows of ducts, each of said rows including a plurality of coaxial independent horizontal duct sections, a plurality of external pipes arranged in manifolds, a plurality of connections between each said manifold and at least one duct section, at least one vertical duct section between duct sections in said rows, two of said walls being opposite end walls and two other of said walls being opposite side walls connecting said end walls, a first pair of said manifolds straddling the end walls at an upper region thereof and a second pair of said manifolds straddling the end walls at a lower region.

Claims (3)
1. A mold for a continuous metal casting machine comprising a plurality of walls connected to define a vertical opening adapted to accommodate metal casting, and, in at least one of said walls, spaced parallel rows of ducts, each of said rows including a plurality of coaxial independent horizontal duct sections, a plurality of external pipes arranged in manifolds, a plurality of connections between each said manifold and at least one duct section, at least one vertical duct section between duct sections in said rows, two of said walls being opposite end walls and two other of said walls being opposite side walls connecting said end walls, a first pair of said manifolds straddling the end walls at an upper region thereof and a second pair of said manifolds straddling the end walls at a lower region thereof, one of said pairs extending further beyond the other towards the center of the side walls, the other of said pairs including fluid inlets such that cooling fluid can pass from opposite ends of said one wall towards the center of the same, the fluid flowing in succession first in one direction and then in the other.
2. A mold as claimed in claim 1 comprising additional horizontal ducts in at least one additional of said walls.
3. A mold as claimed in claim 1 wherein a further of said manifolds is aligned with and between said other pair of manifolds and includes a fluid outlet.
