The ball unit of the hinge has a shank 1 with a ball head 2 at one end and with the opposite end provided Y with suitable fastening means such as threads 3. The outer end of the ball 2 has a wrench socket 4. The socket unit of the hinge consists of two identical parts 5 which when placed together form a generally cylindrical shank 6 with a socket 7 at one end for receiving the ball 2 and with a slot 8 for receiving the shank 9 of the ball unit. Adjacent the other end of the shank 6 is an annular groove 10 of slightly greater diameter than the distance between upper and lower flatszll. The portions 12 of the outer walls of the groove between the flats 11, form outwardly projecting wings or lugs. By reason of the flats 1l, the outermost end of the socket shank 9 is non circular as shown in FIG. 3a.
As illustrative of the manner in which the hinge may be used, there is shown an aluminum door 13 having an extruded aluminum stile 14 hung on an extruded aluminum door jamb l5 having a weather strip flange 16. The ball unit is mounted on the stile 14 and the socket unit is mounted on the door jamb 15. Any number of hinges may be used but only two hinges are needed even for the heaviest doors.
The mounting for the ball unit comprises a comer reinforcing bracket or strip 17 of trapezoidal section with the base 18 having fixed thereto a nut 19 for the threaded end 3 of the shank and with the top 20 having a hole 21 for receiving the shank which extends through an aligned hole 22 in the corner of the stile. The weight of the door is taken by the reinforcing strip 17 through the nut 19 and the bearing provided by the hole 20. The ball units are installed in the door before it is hung. The strip 17 may extend the full height of the door and accept several hinges.
The mounting for the socket member comprises a reinforcing comer strip 23 of trapezoidal cross section within the door jamb 15 having a non circular opening 24 (FIG. 7) in the base 25 and a hole 26 in the top aligned with a hole 27 in the comer of the door jamb. The hole 26 provides a bearing surface for the shank 6 of the socket member. The non circular hole 24 in the base receives the non circular end of the socket member when the socket member is turned 90 from the position shown in FIG. 3 so that the flats l1 on the socket member are vertical rather than horizontal as shown in FIG. 3a. The socket member is inserted until a shoulder 28 bottoms on the top surface 29 of the comer strip and the socket member'is then rotated 90 to bring the wings or lugs 12 back to the horizontal position shown in FIGS. 3 and 3a. In this position the surfaces 30 of the lugs 12 engage the surface 30a on the bottom wall of the reinforcing strip and positively holds the socket member in place. The surfaces 30 of the lugs 12 are provided with a cam surface 3l at the entering ends. VThe purpose of the surfaces 3l is to assist in pulling the socket member into place with the shoulder 28 solid against the surface 29 and with the surfaces 30 of the lugs 12 solid against the surfaces 30a. Thel mounting for the socket member could be describe-d as a bayonet or cam lock joint. When installed, the gravity load of the door is transmitted to the reinforcing strip 23 through the bearing 26 and through bearing wings 33 at the upper and lower sides of the opening 24.
One procedure for hanging the door is to rst install the ball units 1. Next, starting with one of the socket units, preferably the lowermost unit, assemble it on the corresponding ball unit with the slot 8 vvertical instead of horizontal as shown in FIG. 3, and with the shank 6 of the socket unit substantially in alignment with the shank l of the ball unit. While holding the socket unit in this position assembled on the ball unit with a pair of pliers, insert the shank 6 of the ball unit through the holes 26, 27 and 24 until the shoulder 28 on the socket unit bottoms against the surface 29 on the reinforcing strip 23 inside the door jamb. In this position the noncircular end of the socket member has entered the non circular opening 24 and the lugs l2 are behind the surface 30a. Now, by rotating the socket member through a quarter turn, the socket member is securely locked in place in the door jamb and the slot 8 in the socket member is returned to the horizontal position shown in FIG. 3 so that the normal hinge movement can take place. This same operation is repeated for the other hinge. The door may now be swung to the closed position where the sockets 4 in the ball members are accessible for adjustment of the position of the ball units if that should be necessary. The adjustment of the ball vunits moves the door along the center lines of the shanks 1 of the ball units. The adjustment issufflcient to permit the required minor changes in alignment but is insufficient to permit removal of the hinges. The hinges can be removed only when the door is opened to the 45 position in which the shanks l and 6 are in alignment so that the socket member 6 can be turned to bring the flats 1l to the vertical position where they may be moved outward through the noncircular opening 24.
Although not strictly necessary, a dust seal in the form of a flexible annular split ring 35 of width substantially equal to the width of the slot 8 may be slipped into grooves 36 in the socket members. The ring 35 covers the sockets 4.
Thek hinge is easily lubricated. The socket unit retains liquid,`dry or solid lubricant. Standard door reinforcements may be used. A hung door can be removed without changing the hinge adjustments. The hinges cannot be removed when the door is closed so there is no security problem.
What is claimed is:
1. A hinge connection comprising aball unit having shank means, a socket unit complementary to said ball unit and having a slot receiving the shank means of the ball unit, said slot lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the hinge and including the shank means of the ball unit, said socket unit having shank means in said plane and rotatable in said plane when both shank means are in alignment with each other, two members connected by said hinge connection and consisting of a door jamb and a stile of a door, one member having a hollow corner with an opening therein receiving one of said shank means, an internal comer reinforcing member extending across the sides of the comer opposite said opening and having means for attaching said one shank means to said one member, and means for attaching said .other shank means to the other of said members, said one shank means being the shank means of the socket unit having a noncircular part received in intertting relationship in a complementary noncircular opening in said reenforcing member only when the slot in the socket unit is oriented transverse to said plane and is locked in said intertting relationship by relative rotation of the socket unit to locate the slot in said plane'.
2. The combination of claim 1 in which the joint comprises bayonet joint means.
3. The combination of claim l in which said one of said members is a hollow doorjamb with an opening in a corner of the jamb receiving the shank means of the socket member.
4. The combination of claim l in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip of trapezoidal cross section with sides resting against the inside walls of said corner.
5. The combination of claim l in which said one of said members is a hollow stile of a door with an opening in a comer of the stile receiving the shank means of the ball unit member.
6. The combination of claim 1 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip extending substantially the full height of the door.
7. The combination of claim 1 in which the other of said two members is a hollow stile of a door with an opening in a corner of the stile receiving the shank means of the ball unit member.
8. The combination of claim 7 in which an internal comer reinforcing member extends across the sides of the comer of the hollow stile opposite said opening and has means for attaching the shank means of the ball unit to the hollow stile.
9. The combination of claim 8 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip of trapezoidal cross section with sides resting against the inside walls of said corner of the hollow stile.
10. The combination of claim 8 in which the reinforcing member s a metal strip extending substantially the full height of the door.

Claims (10)

1. A hinge connection comprising a ball unit having shank means, a socket unit complementary to said ball unit and having a slot receiving the shank means of the ball unit, said slot lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the hinge and including the shank means of the ball unit, said socket unit having shank means in said plane and rotatable in said plane when both shank means are in alignment with each other, two members connected by said hinge connection and consisting of a door jamb and a stile of a door, one member having a hollow corner with an opening therein receiving one of said shank means, an internal corner reinforcing member extending across the sides of the corner opposite said opening and having means for attaching said one shank means to said one member, and means for attaching said other shank means to the other of said members, said one shank means being the shank means of the socket unit having a non circular part received in interfitting relationship in a complementary non circular opening in said reenforcing member only when the slot in the socket unit is oriented transverse to said plane and is locked in said interfitting relationship by relative rotation of the socket unit to locate the slot in said plane.
2. The combination of claim 1 in which the joint comprises bayonet joint means.
3. The combination of claim 1 in which said one of said members is a hollow doorjamb with an opening in a corner of the jamb receiving the shank means of the socket member.
4. The combination of claim 1 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip of trapezoidal cross section with sides resting against the inside walls of said corner.
5. The combination of claim 1 in which said one of said members is a hollow stile of a door with an opening in a corner of the stile receiving the shank means of the ball unit member.
6. The combination of claim 1 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip extending substantially the full height of the door.
7. The combination of claim 1 in which the other of said two members is a hollow stile of a door with an opening in a corner of the stile receiving the shank means of the ball unit member.
8. The combination of claim 7 in which an internal corner reinforcing member extends across the sides of the corner of the hollow stile opposite said opening and has means for attaching the shank means of the ball unit to the hollow stile.
9. The combination of claim 8 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip of trapezoidal cross section with sides resting against the inside walls of said corner of the hollow stile.
10. The combination of claim 8 in which the reinforcing member is a metal strip extending substantially the full height of the door.
