SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 368,238, dated August 16, 1887.

Application filed November 28, 1886. Serial No. 219,700.

To all whom it may concern:

Beitknown that I, J OHN RENNER, a subjec of the King of Viirtembcrg, Germany, residing at Burlington, in the county ofDes Moines, State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Ironing-Stands and Clothes-Racks Combined, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in folding ironing-stands and clothes-racks combined, the object being to provide a device of this character that will be of simple construc tion and yet furnish a firm stand and rack.

The invention consists in the details of construction and combinations of parts, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of trestle A. Fig. 3 represents an elevation of support 00. Fig. 4 represents a view of my folding ironing-stand and clothes-rack when folded.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several parts.

In the drawings, A represents a trestle,and is composed of the legs a and a, which are in their upper part connected by rungs a a a. Trestle A also has its two rear legs, I) and b, which are e hinged in any suitable manner to the trestle A. Legs 12 and 7) are connected by cross-pieces c. Legs a and a are also connected by the cross-piece cl. The cross-pieces c and (Z are connected by the hinged connecting-bars d. The legs a and a are respectively provided with the ears 0 and e, which are re spectively provided with a series of notches designated in ear 6 byffff, and in ear 6 by g g g g. The ear 0 has the movable top piece h, and ear ehas the movable top pieeeh. These top pieces are each fastened to the ears in one end by a pin, so that they can turn to either side, and thus either open or close the perforations in the ears. When they close the perforations in the cars, they can be fastened down upon the ears by means of clamps K and K.

L is a cross-piece, which at its ends is inserted in one of the perforations of each of the ears, and it can in this manner be set higher or lower, as may be desirable.

The cross'piece L has in its middle the perforation Z, through which the rod on slides. Upon cross-piece L rests the ironing-board M in its broader. end. Underneath the ironing board M, and fastened thereto, as illustrated in the drawings, is the rod m, which attaches the ironing-board M to the cross-piece L, and enables the said ironing-board to slide to and fro upon said cross-piece L.

- The cross-piece (1, connecting legs a and a, is fastened to said legs in such a manner that the same admits of being turned. To the crosspiece d, about in its center, there is fastened to the same the connecting-bar 0, which bar 0 is hinged in its other end to the upright a.

I is a hook fastened to upright u in such a manner as to admit of engaging with a pin on connecting-bar 0, so as to lock the said bar firmly to the said upright u, at right angles to said upright.

The operation of my invention is as follows: Fig. 1. of my drawings shows my invention when in position for work. The rungs a serve as a clothes-rack, and the board M, as it rests upon cross-piece L and support at, presents a firm ironing-board, which can be raised or lowered to suit the individual by means of the adjustable cross-piece L and the adjustable top rest, 00. To fold myironing-stand,I lift the end of board M, resting upon support as, and slide it forward and downward by means of bar m, working in cross-piece L, and my board assumes the position as indicated by the dotted lines marked 1 in Fig. 1. I next unfasten the hook P, and then push upright a down upon connecting-bar 0, and turn foot w" back upon upright a, and the support no assumes the position as indicated by the dotted lines marked 1* in Fig. 1. Now I fold the connecting-bar o,

with the support 00, upon trestle A,at the same time bringing the rear legs, I) and b,up to legs a and a, and my folding ironing-stand assumes the position as indicated in Fig. 4 of my drawings.

What I claim as my'invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a folding ironing-stand and clothesrack, the combination,with a trestle, A, having legs a a", rear legs, I; b, cross-pieces c and d, and ears 6 c, said ears 6 6' being provided with a series of notches and movable top pieces h h, of a crosspiece, L, provided with a perforation, Z, and adapted to rest in said notches formed in the ears 6 e, and an ironing- 7 board, M, adapted to be supported-at one end by a support, an, and provided on its under side with a rod, m, adapted to enter the perforation Z and slide therein, substantially as described.

2. In a folding ironing-stand and clothesrack, the combination, with a trestle, A, having rear legs, I) b, provided with cross-pieces c, the upper cross-piece c pivoted to the legs a a, and the lower cross-piece 0' connected to a cross-piece, d, on the trestle A by hinged bars d, said trestle provided with ears 6 e, having notches and movable top pieces, and a cross-piece, L, provided with a perforation, Z, resting inthe said notches, of an ironingboard, M, supported at one end by the support :0, which is connected to the trestle A by means of the rod 0, and provided on its under side with a rod, m, which slides in the said perforation Z and supports the board M at its other end, substantially as described.
