UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN P. WHITE, ,OFEASTLYNNE, MIssouaI.
, PITMANI SPECIFTCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,942, dated August 9, 1887.
Application filed October 11, 1886. Serial No. M5392. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN P. WHITE,
a citizen of the United ,States, residing at East Lynne, in the county of Cass and State of Mis- 5 souri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitmen for Churn-Motors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Thisinvention relates to pitmen forthe class of churns known as reciprocating-dasher churns, and isan improvement upon Letters Patent issued to me September 21, 1886, and numbered 349,376.
The object of the invention is to connect the upper and lower sections of the dashcr-staff by means of two metallic spring-plates riveted or bolted on each upper section and having a projection or stud upon the lower inner face of each plate, which plates-are operated by means of a thumb or set screw passing through them, and by tightening up the plates the studs are forced into holes or perforations in the lower section of the dasher-staff and hold the sections together, or, by loosening the screw, release them when desired, and, further, to make the pitman adjustable on the crank.
The accompanying drawing fully illustrates my invention, and the figure shows a pitmanrod and detached stafi, showing the method of connection and adjustment.
The upper section of the pitman-rod E has a vertical slot, E, therein, within which the crank (not shown) slides when it is moved to change the stroke of the dasher-stafl" or lower section. Aset-screw, M, is provided for'rcgu- Patent, is-- lating the stroke of the dasher-staff by chango ing the position of the crank within the vertical slot or boxing.
' The dasher-staff G is secured to the upper section of the pitman-rod E by means of two flat metallic spring-plates, F, at its lowereud, and upon the lower inner face of said plates project studs 6, which enter holes e provided for them in the upper part of the lower section or dasher-stafl', G. Through these metallic plates E, which have holes made in them for the purpose, passes a thumb-screw, O, by the manipulation of which the studs 6 are forced into the holes e of the dasher-staii'G and connect the same with the upper section or pitman-rod, E, forming a knuckle-joint, or disconnect thedasher staff, as desired, by loosening the screw 0. p
The crank (not shown in the drawing) is adapted to be placed in the vertical slot E of the pitman-rod E, and it will enter one of the series of openings e e, and is there secured by the agency of the screw M.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 5 The pitman consisting of the rod E, having at its upper end a vertical slot, E, and a series of openings, 6, to receive a crank-shaft, and the thumbscrew M, and at its lower end the plates F, provided with'the projections e, and the regulating thumb-screw 0, all substantially as hereinbefore shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two witnesses.
' BENJAMIN P. XVHITE. Witnesses: J. H. DULL, S. B. REED.
