CURTAIN-POLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,545, dated August 2, 1887.

Be it known that I, AUGUST F. PFEIFER, of Newark, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gurtain-Poles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wooden curtainpoles of that class in which a brass covering or sheath is drawn over the pole and neatly and snugly applied thereto; and the invention consists of a wooden pole or core that is provided at one point of its circumference with a longitudinal saw-cut or incision having an enlarged inner end, and of a sheet-metal covering or sheath that is drawn over the pole and provided with curved abutting flanges that are crowded into the incision in fitting the covering to the pole, so as to apply it tightly thereto.

In making my improved metal-covered curtain-pole the wooden pole or core A is first provided with a longitudinal incision, a, by passing the same over a circular saw, which incision is then enlarged at the inner end by passing through a suitable die, by which the inner end is enlarged in tubular shape, as shown in Fig. 4. The sheet-metal covering or sheath B is shaped with a die corresponding to the exterior shape of the pole, so as to fit snugly on the same. It is provided at the abutting ends with inwardly-bent flangesb b, that are straight next adjoining the abutting edges of the covering and slightly curved at their ends, so as to fit in the incision a and its enlargement a. \Vhcn the covering B is drawn in position over the pole, both are passed together through another die, by which the metal coveringis laid smoothly on the pole and the inwardly-bent flanges forced into the incision a, so that the surplus stock is crowded into the same, as shown in Fig. 1, and the covering thereby tightly fitted to the pole. The inwardly-bent flanges b I) retain the covering firmly on the pole and form a tightly fitting joint at the abutting edges of the covering, without exerting strain on those portions of the pole next to the incision and causing the same to break off or crack, so as to impair the neat and finished appearance of the metal-covered pole.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A curtain-pole consisting of a pole or core having a narrowlongitudinal incision with an enlargement at its inner end, and a sheetmetal covering having inwardly-bent flanges, said flanges abutting at the edges of the incision and engaging the enlarged end of the incision, so as to retain the covering tightly on the pole, substantially as set forth.
