WHEELED EARTH-SGRAPER.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. C. GooDE,

a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Sidney, in the county of Shelby and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheeled Earth- Scrapers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to that class of wheeled earth-Scrapers in whichl the scraper-box isv on top of the end and partially on top of the sides of the box,`increasing the capacity of the box to that extent, thus preventing earth from falling over at the rear, and the latter being so constructed as to afford allthe advantages of a bail-shaped handle, due to the facility with which it can be grasped with both hands, and the consequent ease with which it can be operated.

My invention also comprises certain other novel features, which will be lirst described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.

Figure l of the drawings is a perspective view of a wheeled scraper embodying my invention, with the scraperbox-down readyfor lling. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the box elevated as when lled. Fig. 3 is a side view with one wheel removed, showing the scraper in dumped position.

In the accompanying drawings, A' represents the scraper-box, provided with side handles a, and B the axle, having right-angularly bent ends to form spindles b for the wheels C.

D are the draft-bars, 'the forward ends. of which are rigidly secured to the tongue, while their rear ends vare pivotally attached to the scraper-box by pivot-bolts d passing through the lower ends of supporting-bars E and the sides of the scraper, these bars being composed of two pieces of bar-iron or other suitable metal, one piece being placed on the inside and y the other piece on the outside of each side of the box and extending a suitable distance above thetop of the same.

F represents stop-bars, whose upper ends are pivoted at d to thedraftbars, their-lower ends being provided with inturn'ed shoulders f for engaging with lugs G on the sides of the box, in order to prevent the latter from turn ing over'while filling.

` H represents links, the lower ends of whichv are pivoted to the stopfbars, their upper ends being pivoted to the forward ends of the bail, as will be hereinafter described.

I are lugs on the sides of the scraper-box, upon which the draft-bars rest.

So far this description applies to the scraper shown in my said patent, withthe exception that in that machine the box was provided with a bail instead of side handles, and also that the links were pivoted at their upper ends to short bars attached to the ends of the axle. I 'will now proceed to describe what I conceive to be new.

J J and K K represent my combined bail and bail-shaped handle.

The parts J and K of the bail and handle are formed integral from single bars of metal, these bars being each bent inwardly at a right angle at such a point as will permit the inturned portion, when the bail is secured to the axle, to lie on top of the end ofthe scraperbox and extend about one-fourth the width of the box, each bar being then again bent at a right angle and extending far enough to the rear to form the sides of the bail-shaped handle. The outer ends of the handle portions K are united by a hand-hold, K', and the inner ends by a' crosspiece, J, which is simply a bar of metal with rearwardlylbent ends, which are riveted to the inner sides of bars K. This cross-piece, it will be observed, fills the space between the parts J and completes the bail.

To the rear side of the cross-piece J is secured a metallic loop, L, in which is pivoted a catch-lever, M, this lever extending nearly to the hand-hold, so as to be within convenient reach of the operator.

In order to dispense with the bars to which I formerly pivoted the upper ends of the links ICO II, I pivot said links to the ends of the bail, pivot the bail in the supporting-bars E, and rigidly clamp the bail to the downwardly-bent portions of the axle, all as clearly shown in the d rawings.

N is a vertical spring-stainlard rising` ,from the tongue-frame, and havinga catch, In, with which one of the handles on the scraperbox engages when the box is dumped, as seen in Fig. 3.

The operation ol" this wheeled scraper will be apparent on inspection of the annexed drawings, and therefore description is deemed unnecessary.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is*

l. The combination, with the axle and scraper-box, of a combined bail and bail-shaped handle, the bail being of such size and shape as to rest, when the box is elevated, partially upon the top of the sides and Wholly upon the top ofthe end of the box, for the purpose stated.

2. The combination, with the axle and the scrapcrvbox, of the bail J J and handle K K', combined as described, the bail being` of such size and shape as to rest, when the box is clevated, partially upon the top of the sides and `8. A combined bail andbail-shaped handle, consisting,r ol' bars of metal shaped to form parts J of the bail and parts K of the handle, a hand-hold, as K, uniting parts K at their outer ends, and a crosspiece, J, uniting the same at their lower ends and forming a portion of the bail, all as described, and Vfor the purpose set forth.

4. The combination, with the axle, the scraper-box, the supporting-bars, the links. the stop-bars, and the lugs, of a combined bail and bail-shaped handle, the bail being rigidly secured to the axle, the box suspended from the bail, and the links for operating the stopbars pivoted to the bail, substantially'as described, and for the purposes above set forth.

5. The combination, with the combined bail and bail-shaped handle, constructed as described, ol' acatch-lcvcr, M, pivotedin aloop, L, on the rear side of cross-piece J', said lever extending rearwardly to within a short distance of the hand-hold K ol' the handle; substantially as set forth.
