- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. OHELTZ, OF SHELDON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO ZORAH E. PATRICK, OF SAME PLACE.
PlPE WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,729, dated June 28, 1887. Application filed January 22, 1887. Serinl'No. 225,220. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. CHELTZ, of Sheldon, county of Iroquois, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates toimprovements in the construction of pipe-wrenches, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my device with the pipe in place in the jaw, [5 the dotted lines indicating the position of the parts when the lever is thrown up to loosen the hold upon the pipe. Fig. 2 is a rear edge view of the upper portion of the same.
In detail my device consists of the handle h, which is preferably provided with teeth t,
near the upper end thereof, the point of the extreme upper end having an edge orbite, b, which strikes against-the side of the pipe to be gripped.
j is a loop-jaw, which is hinged at h over a hook projection on the block bl, which is likewise preferably provided with teeth on its outer face to engage with the teeth on the side of the handle, and this block, when the 0 parts are loose, is intended to slide along the inner face of the handle, being coupled thereto by the link l, whose outside ends have eyes which receive thepivot 1), upon which the le ver l is secured. The upper or rounded end of this lever, which is mounted upon the pivot p, is slightly elliptical in shape, forming a cam which bears against the outer face of the handle, and when the lever l is pressed down in the position shown in the full lines in Fig.
4.0 l the block is locked securely against the handle b, the teeth on the faces of these on gaging with each other and preventing them from slipping. The link l is confined upon the block bl by a small angle-block, ab, through 5 which a bolt, b, passes into the lower end of the block bl. The jaw j, being hinged to the sliding block bl in the manner shown, produces this desirable result-namely, that when a section of pipe, 12, is let into the jaw the bite b of the handle strikes the periphery of such 0 pipe above the center of a line drawn through the pipe and the fulcrum of the device, so that until the grip of the lever is loosened it holds thepipe in the recess of the jaw, the bite being outside and above the center of the pipe, while in many,if not all, devices in commen use the bite of the handle strikes the pipe below the center, the tendency being therefore to crowd the pipe up or out of the jaw.
The device can be used without the teeth t in the handle, or the opposite teeth, 15, in the inner face of the sliding block bl; but the use of such teeth is preferable to secure a firm grip upon the pipe. In order to release the pipe from the jaw, it is only necessary to let go the grip on the handle h, and the swinging hook b will fall back and the pipe be released.
I am aware that pipe wrenches having hinged jaws are not new, and do not broadly claim the same as my invention.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
A pipewrench comprising, in combination, the handle it, having a biting-edge, b, and 7 teeth 25 011 its inner face, the block bl, having teeth t, the jaw j, hinged to said block, the link l, through which the end of the block bl and handle it passes, carrying the earn-lever l in a yoke formed by its outer ends, the angle-block ab, secured to the block bl, and the screw b, for holding the parts in position, all combined substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of January, 1887.
CHARLES D. CHELTZ.
