A. H. PRESCOTT. FASTENING FOR PAIL COVERS.
No. 365,703. Patented June 28, 1887.
[Hz/E220:
ALBERT H. PRESCOTT, OF CHICAGO,
ILLINOTS, ASSIG-NOR TO THE INDU- RATED FIBRE COMPANY, or LOOKPORI, NEW YORK.
FASTENING FOR PAlL-COVERS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,703, dated June 28, 1887.
Application tiled April 12, 1887.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. Pnnseo'rr, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Pail-Covers,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of pails usually employed in the packing, storage, and ship ment of articles of merchandiseas, for example, candies, preserves, and jellies, fish, pickles, 850.; and it has for its object to provide a cover for such pails which shall be readily adj usted and so constructed as to afford protection to the rim of the same, and also to provide means whereby the cover may-be securely fastened to the pail without injury to the latter.
My invention consists in certain devices and combinations of devices for effecting said purposes, as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pail containing myim- .provements, and Fig. 2 a broken sectional view of the same.
The pailA may bemade of any suitable material, ot'an y desired size. The cover B, usually made of wood, has its under side of shorter diameter than its upper side, formed by having its under edge cut away, as at I), so that it will fit inside the pail. The upper surface of the lid is of the same or substantially the same diameter as that of the greatest diameter of the top of the pail, and thus is provided the lip or flange G, which is designed to rest upon .and protect the edge of the pail from injury in shipment or storage. This form of construction also secures the pail-cover from lateral displacement and makes a tight close 40 joint, whereby liquids as well as solids may be carried in the pail without loss by leakage. As shown by the drawings, that part ably made of tin or other light metal, and of v any desired length to engage the hoop D, around which they are passed, their free ends being secured to the top of the pail by tacks or small brads cee. By this means of fastening no injuryis done to the pail proper,tl1e securing-tacks or other fastenings being driven into the cover. The two ends of the strip E may both be secured by the same tack or fast ened separately. If separately fastened, one end is first tacked and the free end brought under the hoop. The latter can be drawn up tightly by pulling on the strip until it is forced as far up the side of the pail as its size will admit.
These covers and fastening devices are adapted for use with any of the well-known forms of pails or similar receptacles, and are readily applied to jars, glass vessels, &c.
1. A securing means for pail-covers, com prising, in combination, the pail, the cover, a movable ring or hoop of less diameter than the top of the pail, and strips, substantially as described, passing around the ring or hoop and secured to the cover, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of a pail, a cover having a projecting flange to protect the edge of the pail, a movable ring or hoop, and stripspassing around the ring or hoop and secured to the cover, substantially as described.
ALBERT H. PRESCOTT.
