CROSS REFERENCE The present application is a division of my copending application, Ser. No. 750,695, filed Aug. 6, 1968, which, in turn, is a continuation-in-part application based upon my earlier application, Ser. No. 599,461, filed Dec. 6, 1966 and which was abandoned.

This invention relates toholders for cosmetic sticks, such as lipsticks and, more particularly, to a holder for multiple lipstick refills individually exchangeable with a lipstick similarly retained in a refillable retractable lipstick holder.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a holder of the character indicated which will permit casual and swift individual exchange of its lipsticks with one retained in a refillable retractable lipstick holder and which will enable each of the exchanged lipsticks to be securely, but manually releasably, fastened in its respective holder.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the character indicated which will permit exchange of its lipsticks in a clean manner.

The most important object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the character indicated comprising'compact means for achieving the above objects economically and efficiently.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the character indicated which is serviceable as a display stand for immediate selection of lipsticks of different colors or shades for purchase or use.

Another important object of the present invention is to provide a holder of the character described so that woman may avail themselves of several lipsticks of different colors or shades without requiring that they pay the price of a complete retractable lipstick holder for each lipstick; this object is to encourage use of more and differently colored lipsticks to enhance a womans attractiveness.

The foregoing objects, as well as additional objects and features of the present invention, will be readily apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which illustrate,by way of example, preferred embodiments of the invention.

FIG. 1 is an elevational sectional view of an assembled refillable retractable lipstick holder of the type related to the present invention, the lipstick being shown in its uppermost position;

FIG. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view, on an enlarged scale, of the lipstick holding cup part with its integral centric walled hollow socket member shown embedded in the lower end portion of the lipstick and of the lipstick holders retractable carrier with its centric axially extending stud, the stud and the socket member being shown separated from their assembled position shown in FIG. I;

FIG. 3 is a plan view of FIG. 2 taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 2;

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view of the lipstick holding cup part and the carrier similar to FIG. 2 but modified with respect to the fastening means for detachably securing the lip stick holding cup part to the carrier;

FIG. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of the lipstick holding cup part and the carrier similar to FIG. 2, but modified with respect to the fastening means for detachably securing the lipstick holding cup part to the carrier;

FIG. 6 is a section taken on line -10 of FIG. 5; and

FIG. 7 is a diagrammatic view, partly broken open, of the manifold lipstick holder, according to the present invention, with multiple lipstick holding cup parts such as are sown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5 being shown connected to an elongated flat holding base part by integral upright studs, the studs are shown within the lipstick holding cup parts whose socket members are not visible and are also shown exposed, a transparent cover for the multiple lipsticks is also shown.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the refillable, retractable lipstick holder comprises a tu bular body 10 having a carrier- 11 therewithin for elevating and retracting a lipstick or like substance relative to the tubular body. The tubular body is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 12 and the carrier is provided with a lateral projection 13 extending outwardly through slot 12, so that longitudinal movement of the lateral projection relative to the slot will causethe carrier to be elevated or retracted relative to the tubular body. Slot I2 is closed at both ends, thereby limiting the movement of carrier 11 within tubular body 10.

As shown in FIG. 1, a cup 14 made out of thin, flexible metal holds a lipstick 15 therein. The lipstick holding cup part 14 is mounted on carrier 11. The lipstick holding cup part has a base 16 and an inwardly axially extending socket 17 formed integrally with the base. Socket member 17, in accordance with the present invention, has a throat portion 18.

Carrier 11, preferably, is in the form of an inverted cup 20 made out of thin, flexible metal having sidewalls 21 and a top surface 22. An outwardly axially extending stud 23 is formed out of the top surface 22. Stud 23 comprises a rounded head portion 24, the cross-sectional diameter of which is slightly larger than that of the throat portion of socket member 17 and a relatively narrow neck portion 25. Stud 23 is provided with one or more axial slots 27 extending through its head and neck portions, as shown in FIG. 3. The purpose of the slots is to permit radial compression of stud head 24.

As is evident, carrier 11 and the lipstick holding cup part 14 are detachably secured to each other by fitting the head portion 24 of stud 23 into throat 18 of socket member 17 and then manually pressing the same together.

FIG. 4 exemplifies a modification of FIG. 2 in that a spring type snap-fastener is utilized for detachably securing the lipstick holding cup part 14 to carrier 11 which is positioned in tubular body 10.

The base 16 of cup part 14 is formed with a socket member 70. Cut-outs 70a and 70b are provided in the side wall of the socket member. An S-shaped spring, shown at 50 and 51, is fitted upon the base of cup part 14 so that it abuts against the side wall of the cup part and its opposed shoulders enter cutouts 70a and 70b respectively, intersecting the interior of socket member 70.

The socket member coacts with a stud 71 having a radially enlargedhead portion 72 whose maximum diameter is greater than the distance between the opposed shoulders of the spring protruding through cut-outs 70a and 70b. Accordingly, cut part 14 will be detachably secured to carrier 11 when it and the carrier are manually pressed together. As is evident, head portion 72, when penetrating into the socket member, will initially force the spring shoulders radially outwardly and then the spring shoulders will snap back and locate themselves in the constricted stud portion 73 as the stud penetrates deeper into the socket member.

Separation of the cup part from the carrier is effected simply by pulling them apart.

FIGS. 5 and 6 show an arrangement in which a socket member 75, formed in base 16 of the lipstick holding cup part 14, has a circumferentially outwardly protruding bulge 75a which accommodates and retains a split ring 76 preferably made out of suitable springy metal wire. The outer diameter of the split ring and of the inner diameter of bulge 750 are so correlated that the split ring can be slightly radially expanded.

Socket member 75 coacts with stud 71 of carrier 11. When the radially enlarged portion 72 of the stud is pushed into socket member 75, split ring 76 will yield radially outwardly and permit passage of the stud deeper into the socket member, whereupon, the split ring will snap back and lodge itself in the constricted stud portion 73 and releasable secure the cup part to the carrier.

FIG. 7 diagrammatically shows a cover 80 for the multiple lipsticks 15 which are mounted on an elongated flat holding base part 81 to which lipstick holding cup parts 84, such as are shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, are connected by upright studs 83, such as are shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, which, preferably, are formed as integral members of the holding base part 81 and fully extend above the fiat surface.

Cover 80 is transparent, as is indicated at 82, and is manually removable to permit access to the lipsticks on display.

As is evident from the previous description of FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, the lipstick holding cup parts are manually releasable from the studs by merely lifting the cup parts off the studs.

The lipstick holding cup parts may be casually and swiftly connected to the holding base part by merely manually forcing upright cup parts down over the studs without regard to what rotary position the cup parts may be aligned relative to the studs.

The cup parts are fully exposed in their assembled position on the flat holding base part and therefore provide maximum surface engaging area for'manually lifting the lipstick holding cup parts off the holding base partwithout contacting and becoming soiled by the soft colored lipsticks.

As is seen in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, the centric walled

17, 70 and 75, respectively, are embedded in the lower end portion of the lipsticks and are formed integrally with the base of their associated cup parts. The socket members are preferably closed at their uppermost ends, as shown in FIGS. 2, 4 and 5, and therefore prevent their paired studs from becoming soiled by the soft colored lipsticks when the studs are positioned within the lipstick holding cup parts and, therefore, when lipstick holding cup parts are removed from the holding base part, clean studs will be exposed, so that the display stand will not present a messy appearance and cannot soil whatever may come into contact with the exposed studs.

The compact lipstick holding cup part construction makes it unnecessary to elongate the side walls of a lipstick holding cup below the lower end or base of the lipstick to provide a socket in which the sockets paired stud will not become soiled by colored lipstick.

The features of the present invention have been fully set forth. However, since obvious modifications may be made in the device of the present invention without departing from its scope, as defined in the claims, it will be understood that all matter contained inthe foregoing specification and shown in the accompanying drawings will be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

What is claimed is:

1. A manifold lipstick holder comprising a flat elongated holding base part having a plurality of integral upright stud members at spaced intervals and a plurality of lipstick holding cup parts having a centric walled axially extending hollow socket member formed integrally with the base of each of said lipstick holding cup parts and embedded in the lower end portion of the lipstick being held within their respective lipstick holding cup parts, said lipstick holding cup parts being detachably connected to said elongated holding base part with their bases resting on the flat surface of said elongated holding base part, said stud members being positioned within said socket members and said socket members having transverse upper surfaces encompassing the uppermost ends of said stud members to prevent soiling of said stud members by the lipstick within the holding cup part of their paired socket members, said stud members being provided with radially extending shoulder means and said socket members being provided with radially extending shoulder means, said shoulder means being so made that the shoulder means of said stud members overlap the shoulder means of said socket members to safeguard against accidental axial separation of said lipstick holding cup parts from said elongated holding base part, and at least one of said shoulder means being so made as to resiliently yield radially when manual force is applied to pull said lipstick holding cup parts off said elongated holding base part, said lipstick holding cup parts providing manual surface engaging area for pulling said lipstick holding cup parts off said elongated holding base part without contacting and becoming soiled by the upper end portion of the lipsticks exposed outside said lipstick holding cup parts.
