SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,716, dated June 14, 1887.

ons, sulkyplows, mowers, &c.; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, as hereinafter described, and spec1fically set forth in the claims.

Figure 1 is a side view of my improved seat. Fig. 2 1s a rear view of thesame. Fig. 3 isa perspective view of the screw and lever-carrying arnrdetached from the seat and its support. Fig. 4. 1s a perspective view'of the bearingplate of the seat, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamp shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the drawings, A represents the seat provlded wlth pendent perforated lugs a axially on Its under side, by which it is supported and plvoted on the rod B. This rod also passes through upwardly-projecting lugs c on the front and rear ends of the fiat bearing-plate C. The rod B is provided with a head on its forward end and a nut on the rear end, to facilitate the removal of the seat when desired, and 1t is located directly beneath the middle portron of the seat A; hence the seat is adapted to oscillate laterally on the rodB. When a vehicle passes along a hill-side or other inclined surface, and is partly tilted, its seat becomes also inclined laterally; but it is desirable that it be kept horizontal laterally for the ease and comfort of the driver, and also his safety. This is accomplished by my construction, as follows: The spring or seat-support D, attached at its forward end to the vehicle by bolts, or by any well-known means, has its rearwardlyextending end made to pass immediately under the bearing-plate C. A clampplate, E, provided with four upwardly-extending arms, E, located at'its four corners, is suspended from the top of the plate 0, the ends of the arms E being bent inwardly at E over the edges of the plate 0. The clamp-- plate E is also provided in the middle thereof with a screw-threaded perforation to receive a clamping screw, 6, that passes upwardly through the clamp-plate E, and also through a laterallyextending arm, F, and presses against the washer G, receiving the end of the screw, as shown in Fig. 2. This washer G is located under the spring D, and is provided with shoulders that enter between the four upward arms E of the clamp E, and prevents it from getting out of position. provided at its outer end with 'apcr'forated boss, F, screw-threaded to receive a screw, H, having a double-V thread or a square thread. having forkedends to straddle the lever I at one end, while at the upper end it straddles a lug, a projecting from the side of the'seat,
and is'pivoted thereto by a bolt, f. Theupwardlyextending rod J acts as asupport or brace for-the seat A, and in connection with the lever I and screw H, permits it to be kept level. The arm F, clamp E, and upper bearing-plate, C, may be made in one piece of metal, as represented in Fig. 3, and may be substituted for the above-named separate parts to lessen the number of pieces and facilitate the assembling of the devices used with my improved seat. The under lever, I, in place of being made angular or Z-shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, may be made straight by having the lugs F of such length that said lever will clear the parts under the bottom of the seat.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of alatcrally-oscillating seat, the pivot-rod B, fixed parallel to the general line of motion of the vehicle, of which said seat forms a part, the lugs or support a for the seat, with a plate, 0, provided with upwardly-extending lugs c, seat-support D,
clamp E, arm F, and clamping-screw a, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of a laterally'oscillating vehicle-seat, the screw-carrying arm 1 and a 5 screw, H, having a handle attached, with the pivoted lever I and rod 3', substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. The combination of the seat A, screw H, screw-carrying arm F, and lever I, pivoted to no the arm 1*, and having a, groove at one end to receive the end of the screw and at the other end the rod J pivoted to the seat, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. The combination of a seat-support, B, a screw-carrying arm, F, and plate 0, clamped I 5 thereto, with the bent lever I and rod J, substantially as and for the purpose described.
