Abstract

A desk is formed from a folded cardboard blank to have a flat top surface. A channel is provided along one edge of the top surface to receive a roll of paper. A mask is attached to the desk to overlie a marginal area of the top surface and to hold paper drawn from the roll flat against the top surface.

2 Sheets-Sheet 1 DRAWING DESK The invention relates to desks.

The invention provides a desk formed from a folded cardboard blank, which desk has a flat top surface and means for mounting a roll of paper adjacent one edge of the surface for supplying paper for use on the surface.

Preferably the desk is made from a single sheet of folded cardboard.

Preferably a mask is provided together with means for mounting the mask on the top surface of the desk.

Preferably the means for mounting the roll of paper comprises a channel extending along one side of the desk for receiving the roll of paper. v

Preferably a serrated edge is provided along an edge of the top surface of the desk remote from the channel for tearing off paper withdrawn from the roll.

. Preferably holes are provided in-the top surface adjacent one edge thereof for receiving drawing implements.

The invention includes a desk as aforesaid together with a roll of paper mounted on the desk.

The invention also includes a cardboard blank cut to shape and marked with fold lines for making a desk as aforesaid.

An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:

FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of an assembled drawing desk;

FIG. 2 shows the outline of a piece of cardboard blank from which the desk is assembled;

FIG. 3 shows the outline of a masking frame and of some stencils.

The drawing desk illustrated in FIG. 1 is a childs drawing desk made entirely from cardboard. The desk is manufactured by cutting out the shape shown in FIG. 2 in stiff cardboard. The cardboard may then be folded by a child along various fold marks to form the assembled drawing desk shown in FIG. 1. A masking frame 11 is cut out separately and fixed on to the desk. 1

The desk has a sloping drawing surface over which paper from a roll 12 is drawn. The roll of paper 12 lies in a channel 13. The paper is held in contact with the drawing surface by a masking frame 11 which fits over the drawing surface 10. The paper can be pulled out from the lower side of the drawing surface to draw a clean piece of paper from the roll 12 over the drawing surface 10 and the used piece of paper may be torn off against a serrated edge 14 along the bottom edge of the masking frame 11. Drawing pens 25 are held in holes 24 along the top edge ready for use.

A cardboard baseboard is pasted to the inside of the desk just below the holes 24 in order to provide a support for the drawing pens 25 held in the holes 24. The holes 24 may be oblong or of other shapes other than circular for holding different sorts of drawing implements.

In FIG. 2 solid lines represent a cut right through the cardboard and broken lines represent scores in the cardboard along which the cardboard may be folded. Along the broken lines AA there is a score on the front surface of the cardboard and along the broken lines BB there is a score on the back surface. The cardboard is folded away from the scores.

Theparts of the unfolded cardboard in FIG. 2 are given the same reference numerals as the parts they form in the assembled desk in FIG. 1. The parts 15 form the sides, 10 the drawing surface, 16 the front and 17 the back. The tongues 18 are inserted through the holes 19 and that part forms the channel 13. The tongues 20 are inserted through the holes 21 and the tongues 22 through the holes 23. Holes 24 form the slots in which the drawings and pens 25 are held.

The masking frame 11 shown in FIG. 3 is cut from a separate piece of cardboard. Solid lines represent complete cuts in the cardboard and broken lines AA represent a score on the frame surface as in FIG. 2. The tongues 27 are inserted into the slots 26 in FIG. 2. The center portion of the piece of cardboard from which the masking frame 11 is made is cut to form stencils 28. The shaded portions are the pieces of cardboard which are wasted.

The invention is not restricted to the details of the foregoing example.

We claim: 1. A desk comprising an upright front wall, an upright backwall of greater depth than the front wall, sidewalls extending between the front and backwalls, a ledge area extending along an upper edge of the backwall between the sidewalls for receiving writing or drawing implements, a sloping wall extending from the front wall of the desk between the sidewalls and stopping short of the ledge, an upwardly open channel extending parallel to the front and back walls between the sloping wall and ledge for receiving a roll of paper to be fed over the sloping wall, which front, rear and side walls, ledge, channel, and sloping wall are all formed from a folded sheet of cardboard,

a separate mask corresponding in size to the sloping wall,

the mask having projecting tabs on opposed edges thereof,

and

the sidewalls having slots in which the tabs of the mask engage to hold the mask in situ on the sloping wall.

2. The desk assembly of claim 1 wherein said ledge area is substantially horizontal.

3. A desk as claimed in claim 1 wherein a serrated edge is provided along an edge of the top surface of the desk remote from the channel for tearing off paper withdrawn from the roll.

4. A desk as claimed in claim 1 wherein holes are provided in the ledge for receiving writing or drawing implements.

5. A blank which can be folded to form a desk assembly, comprising a center body portion which represents a sloping wall top surface for the assembly,

a front wall portion attached to one end of said center body portion for being folded downwardly from the center body portion to define a front wall of the assembly,

sidewall portions attached to opposite sides of said center body portion for being folded downwardly therefrom to define sidewalls of the assembly,

a channel portion attached to said center body portion at an opposite end from the end at which said frontwall portion is attached, said channel portion having a plurality of parallel fold lines which permit a shaping of said channel portion to define an upwardly open channel near the upper back area of said assembly so that a roll of paper can be carried in the channel and fed over the sloping top surface of the assembly,

a ledge portion attached to said channel portion for being folded relative to the channel portion to define a substantially horizontal ledge area for the assembly, and

a backwall portion attached to said ledge portion for being folded downwardly therefrom to define a backwall of the assembly.

6. The blank of claim 5 wherein said ledge portion is provided with holes therethrough for defining openings into which writing or drawing implements can be received.

Claims (6)

1. A desk comprising an upright front wall, an upright backwall of greater depth than the front wall, sidewalls extending between the front and backwalls, a ledge area extending along an upper edge of the backwall between the sidewalls for receiving writing or drawing implements, a sloping wall extending from the front wall of the desk between the sidewalls and stopping short of the ledge, an upwardly open channel extending parallel to the front and back walls between the sloping wall and ledge for receiving a roll of paper to be fed over the sloping wall, which front, rear and side walls, ledge, channel, and sloping wall are all formed from a folded sheet of cardboard, a separate mask corresponding in size to the sloping wall, the mask having projecting tabs on opposed edges thereof, and the sidewalls having slots in which the tabs of the mask engage to hold the mask in situ on the sloping wall.

2. The desk assembly of claim 1 wherein said ledge area is substantially horizontal.

3. A desk as claimed in claim 1 wherein a serrated edge is provided along an edge of the top surface of the desk remote from the channel for tearing off paper withdrawn from the roll.

4. A desk as claimed in claim 1 wherein holes are provided in the ledge for receiving writing or drawing implements.

5. A blank which can be folded to form a desk assembly, comprising a center body portion which represents a sloping wall top surface for the assembly, a front wall portion attached to one end of said center body portion for being folded downwardly from the center body portion to define a front wall of the assembly, sidewall portions attached to opposite sides of said center body portion for being folded downwardly therefrom to define sidewalls of the assembly, a channel portion attached to said center body portion at an opposite end from the end at which said front wall portion is attached, said channel portion having a plurality of parallel fold lines which permit a shaping of said channel portion to define an upwardly open channel near the upper back area of said assembly so that a roll of paper can be carried in the channel and fed over the sloping top surface of the assembly, a ledge portion attached to said channel portion for being folded relative to the channel portion to define a substantially horizontal ledge area for the assembly, and a backwall portion attached to said ledge portion for being folded downwardly therefrom to define a backwall of the assembly.

6. The blank of claim 5 wherein said ledge portion is provided with holes therethrough for defining openings into which writing or drawing implements can be received.
