My invention has relation to What is commonly known as a reversible tip for leadpencils, pencil-point protectors, and like articles-that is to say,a removable tip (adapted usually to hold a stick of rubber or other erasive material) combined with a socket formed in or attached to the pencil or other article, into which socket either end of the tip can beinserted,aecording as it is desired to cover or expose the rubber or other material or article carried by said tip. Such a device, broadly considered, is not new, but has been long on the market and in use; and it has also been customary to so form the device that the two parts-the removable and reversible tip and the socket-may be detachably fastened together,such fastening having heretofore usually been accomplished by forming on the tip a screw-thread to screw into a corresponding thread formed in the socket. v

My improvement has relation more particularly to the means for fastening the two parts together, and can best be explained and understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention in its preferred form, said device being applied to the end of a leadpencil. tion of its length into jaws which are springclosing. The outer ends of these jaws are bent or inclined inwardly, as seen at b,with a view to enter a corresponding annular groove in the tip 13. This tip is sheet metal, cylindrical in forrn,and of any usual construction, so far as concerns that portion of it which reeeives or carries the rubber or other article with which it is desired to provide the tip. In the present instance the tip contains a cylindrical stick, d, of rubber or erasive inawith one end closed. The tipis of such size or diameter, as compared with the socket, that when inserted therein it will slightly expand the jaws or split parts of the socket. Consequently, when the tip is inserted far enough, thejaws will meet and snap into the annular groove or recess a, formed in the body of the tip, the two parts being thus fastened together tightly enough to prevent them from coming apart under any ordinary conditions of use, but at the same time not positively enough to prevent them from being pulled apart by hand.

The ends of the tip are rounded or beveled to permit of their easy insertion into the socket, and I provide two grooves, 0, one 011 each side of the central head, 0, so that the reversible tip may be inserted and held in place either with the rubber exposed,as in Fig. 1,or with the rubber covered and contained within the socket, as in Fig. 2.

Having described myimprovenient, what I claim is- The tube A, split as at a, to form springelosingjaws, having inwardlyturned ends I), in combination with the rubber-containing tip B, provided with the annular head 0 and the two annular grooves 0, one 011 each side of said head, as herein shown and described.
