UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES D. ROGERS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND;
omve-scesw.
sl ncrrrcn-rxon forming part or-1.6mm Patent No. 364,302, dated June '1. 1887, Application flied October 13. 1886. Serial No. 216,098. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. ROGERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Drive Screws or Nails; and Ido hereby declare the following to bee full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable. others skilled in to, the art to which it appcrtains to make-and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention herewith relates to improvementsin drivescrews or nails; and itconsists of a drive screw or nail having ahead,aro1 1ghened shank adjacent to the head, a helical groove or thread formed on thebody of the wire whose diameter exceeds the normal diameter of the wire stock and tern inatingina sharpened and threaded point, all as will be more fully here- .after set forth and claimed. v y The object of this invention is to produce a 2 5 drive-screw having superior holding qualities, said invention being an' improvement in the 'wire nail shown and claimed in my pending application for United States Letters Patent filed AugustG, 1886, Serial No. 210,165. Figure l in the accompanying sheet of drawings represents a perspective view of my improved drive-screw as provided with ahead, at roughened shank, and an enlarged screwthread' terminating in the sharpened or coui' cals'crew-threaded point. 1 Fig. 2 is a similar view showing said nail provided with an enlarged ratchet-shaped thread extending to the point of-the conical-shaped end, and Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of the drive o screw or nail having a series of enlarged annular corrugations formed thereon and extending to the point of the screw.
The following is a more detailed description of the invention:
A in the drawings designates the improved drive-screw as a whole, the same consisting of the shank s, nicked head h n, roughened portion 1 adjacent to the head, and the ser'ew-' threaded portion t, terminating in the sharpened or conical-shaped point p, the latter also being screw-threaded, the diameter of the said thread t being somewhat larger than the wire stock or shank 8,, as clearly shown.
In Fig. 2 the form of the screw-thread is represented as ratchet-shaped, the same being enlarged as compared with the normal diametory of the shank s, and also extending to the ezitreme end of the conical point p.
In Fig. 3 aseries. of enlarged corrugations t is formed on" the body or shank of the screw or nail, the same in like manner extending to the end of the sharpened point.
I would not be understood, however, aslimiting myself to the particular form of screwthread shown in the drawings, as various kinds may be used in con ueeti on with the roughened shank 1* without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I disclaim as my invcntion-a gimlet-pointcd wood-screw having a reduced stem or shank; but What I do claim, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is-
, As a new article of manufacture, the drive screw hereinbefore described, having a head,
'a roughened shank adjacent to said head, a
screw-thread of greater diameter than the normal size of the wire or shank, and a sharpened screw-threaded point, substantially as shown and'set forth a I In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES 1). ROGERS.
