SCHOOL DESK AND SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 364,247, dated June 7, 1887.
. Application filed Mari-h 10,1886. Serial No. 194,697. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Vabash, in the county of WVabash and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined School Desks and Seats; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in combined school desks and seats; and it has for its objects to provide means whereby asimple, easily constructed, and cheap desk and seat may be made. These objects I attain by the means illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, in which-- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved desk and seat; Fig. 2, a detailed view of a portion looking from the inside; Fig. 3, a vertical section thereof; Fig. 4, a detail front elevation of a portion of the main .standard; Fig. 5, a modification of a portion of the seat and side frames, and Fig. 6 represents a section of the frame provided with a flange on each inner face of the angle-iron composing said frame.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates my combined desk and seat constructed of two side frames, B, both of which are provided at suitable points with disks 0, having on their inner faces annular grooves D.
The letter E indicates the frames of the scat, each having a disk, F, which are provided with annular'rings G, which fitinto the grooves D, above referred to, forming a hinge for the seat. To further strengthen the hinge, the disk F is provided with a central opening, H, into which fits a circular projection formed on the face of a lug, I, bolted to the side frames of the desk.
On the inside of the side frames, and at suitable points, are located the scat-stops J, and for additional stoppage stops are formed on the inside faces of the disks F, (indicated by the letter It.) This stop is also indicated in dotted lines in the position which it occupies when the seat is thrown up against the back. In operation it co-operates with stop J. The lug I, against which it bears, is bolted to the frame and liesin a concavity in the same in such manner that its downward extension bears laterally against the concave surface of the frame, and it is thus held against force applied through said stop R.
Stops have heretofore been made in the interior of the disk, and lugs have also been used; but I am not aware that my particular construction and combination of these parts was known prior to my invention.
The stops J and R will support the seat and any Weight thereon when the said seat is in a" horizontal position, while should the seat be folded back, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, the lug I acts as a stop and prevents the said seat contacting with and injuring the back.
To put the desk and seat together, the seat frames, with the annular rings, are fitted into the annular grooves of the desk-frames, the ing with its circular projection is inserted in position, and thelug is bolted, as represented in the drawings, holding the three parts together, but still allowing the seat-frame sufficient movement to open and close. The sides having been secured together, slats L, forming the seat and back, are placed between.
. To secure the slats into the f ramcs, the frames are made at their edges in the shape of a right angle, as indicated by the letter M, and as shown in Fig. 3, the horizontal face of the angle has a flange, N, which extends into a groove cut into the slats above mentioned, the slats of the seat distending the sides and holding them in that position against the desk frames, which are held together by the slats in the back and the brace P, and to secure the slats into the frames screws are used through the sides, as shown.
By the construction indicated in Fig. 6 the screws may be dispensed with. Shallow grooves are formed both in the bottom and ends of the slots, adapted to closely fit correspond ing flanges on the frame. Each slot is placed in suitable relation to theframe, and then forced laterally, so as to cause the flanges to enter the frames provided with annular grooves, seatterial forming the seat and back, said supports frames having disks with annular rings, the having flanges extending into the ends and said disks also provided with central openings, under sides of the said material, substantially lugs Z, secured to the side frames in a conas described.
