SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,676, dated May 24, 1887.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LEWIS A. PLATT, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of

- which I declare the following to be afull, clear,

and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

This invention is in the nature of an improvement in bar buttons, and the invention consists of abar button constructed in the manner herein particularly shown, described, and claimed.

In theaccompanying sheet ofdrawings, Figure 1 is a top View of my button. Fig. 2 is a section in the plane a: a2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an under side view. Fig. 4 is a side view of a cross-bar with a curved center. Fig. 5is an under side view of said cross-bar. Fig. 6 is a side view of a cross-bar with a straight center.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

This invention particularly relates to an improvement in so-ealled bar buttons thatis, buttons with a central perforation spanned by a bar of metal, over which the threads are passed in sewing the button to the garment. Buttons of this character are common, old, and well known, and my invention relates only to what I believe to be an improvement onthese old and well-known buttons and the improve ment, referring to the drawings, consists, first, in making the back-plate A of the button with a hub, a, a central perforation, b, and an inner projecting flange, B, surrounding the perforation. This inner flange projects inwardly a convenient distance, as in Fig. 2. The back-plate having the construction described, a bar, 0, is made of wire or other material, curved in its center, 0, as in Fig.4, or straight, as in Fig. 6, and having notches cl formed near the extremities of the bar and flattened ends 6. The notches d are so formed in the bar 0 that when that bar is placed diametrically across the opening b of the back A these notches will receive a part of the edge of the flange B, and the entering of the edge of this flange in this way will keep the bar in place to the extent of preventing its lateral movement.

When the bar is fitted to the baokpIate in the manner described, the center 0 of the bar, when curved, protrudes downward to some extent through the opening b, and so affords an easy passage for the needle and thread over the bar when the button is being sewed onto the garment.

The flattened ends 6 of the bar 0 have adouble function: They permit the fitting in and the securing of the face-plate D by not projecting in a manner to obstruct the fitting of the face-plate to the back, and they possess the other function of affording flat bearingsurfaces against which the under surface of the frontplate, D, may bear and so tightly confine the bar 0 in position when the face-plate is finally secured to the back-plate of the button, as in Fig. 2.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a button, the following elements in combination: a back-plate, A, formed with a hub, a, and a central perforation, b, surrounded by a flange, B, a bar, 0, with notches (Z, so located as to receive the edge of the flange B, and with flattened ends a, and a face-place, D, as and for the purpose described.
