Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica CHARLES E. BEST, OF .lORDANfNEVV YORK.
ANCHOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,579, dated May 24, 1887.
Application filed Marl-h 1l, 1F87. Serial No. 230,807. (No model.)
To all when?, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHAnLEs E. BEST, of Jordan, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following, taken in connection with the aecompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object ofthis invention is to provide a boat-anchor which shall have its dukes adapted -to be locked in their grappling position on the shank when desired for use,and also adapted to be released from said position, so as to readily lose their anchoring hold when it is desired to hoist the anchor; and to that end my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the component parts of the anchor, as
hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of my improved anchor iu its operative position. Fig. 2 .is a side view of the anchor folded for storage; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spending parts.
A represents the shank, which is composed of a tube having its ends screw-threaded and screwed into screw-threaded sockets a a', respectively, in the ferrule or cap B and head C.
The cap B is provided with a bail, b,to which the anchor cable or chain c is attached, and is also provided with an eye, e, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
The head C is provided with ears d d d d, on which are hinged the dukes ffff, said dukes having heel-extensions f f j f', each of'which is in line with its respective duke, or stands in such a position in relation thereto as to cause the heel-extension f to point forward from the end ofthe head C and toward a point in line with the axis of the shank A.
The head O has a channel, h, extending through it inline with the aforesaid axis, and in said channel slides a bolt, t', having on its inner end a head, Z, which limits the outward movement of the bolt, said bolt heilig of sufficient length to project with its outer end between the ends ofthe heel-extensions ffff of the dukes when the bolt is in its extreme outward position, as represented in Figs. 1 and 3 of the B, and is ofsufdcient length to roach to the boat to be manipulated thcreat.
The dukes `when in their distcn ded or operative position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, rest on shoulders t t on the head C, and the heel-extensions of said dukes resting against the bolt i serve to lock the dukes in their said positions.
When it is desired to hoist the anchor, the same is made to readily release its grapple or anchoring hold by drawing on the cord or wire u, so as to withdraw the bolt t from between the heel-extensions of the dukes, the
latter being then allowed to fall forward into the position represented in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and also as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and when in this position the anchor is in a compact form convenient for handling and storing.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. An anchor composed of a hollow shank, a head on one end of said shank, dukes pivoted on said head and adapted to swing forward, and a bolt sliding in the shank and through the head and adapted to lock the dukes in their distended position, as specified.
2. In an anchor, the combination ofa hollow shank, a head secured'to one end of said shank and having a channel extending through it in line with the shank, dukes hinged on the head to swing forward thereon, and provided with heelextensions, a bolt sliding in the channel of the head and adapted to enter between the ends of the aforesaid heel-extensions, a spring inthe shank forcing the bolt outward, andl a cord or wire connectedv to the bolt for withdrawing rthe same from between the heel-extensions of the dukes, substantially as described and shown.
3. The combination of the shank. A, Screwf- IOC) threaded at its ends and provided with the :til constructed and combined substantially :is stop o, the cap B, screwed-onto one end of the described and shown. shank and provided with the bail b and eye e, In testimony WhereofI have hereunto signed I5 the head C, screwed onto the opposite end of my name and affixed my seal, in the presence 5 the shank and provided With the channel h, of two attesting Witnesses, at Syracuse, in the ears d d d d, and shoulders t t t t, the ukes f county of Onondnga,in thcStitte of New York7 jlfji', hitnged onfsitcrstmplrovided (fitl l this 5th day of March, 1887.
