SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,236, dated May 17, 1887.
Application filed July 30, 1886. SerialNo. 209,532.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrn A.. I-IoDEL, of Cumberland, iii the county 0f Alleghany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chimneys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to chimneys, comprising certain details in the construction of a device with a view of rendering it effective in action, simple in construction, and readily applicable to the building in connection with which itis to be used.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a building provided with niy device. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on line m rv, Fig. l. Fig. 3 isa detail sectional view taken on line y y, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4t is a sectional View showing manner of applying my chimney to new buildings or to buildings not having brick fines.
In the drawings, A represents the ordinary brick flue. In the top of this flue, and just below the roof, I securely build in a metallic casting, C, having lateral flanges c. It is also provided with an offset, c', about midway of its vertical portion, and it is also extended at its top at right angles and provided with the vertical flanges c2, passing up to the roof of the building, as shown.
It will be seen that the body portion of the casting forms a continuation of the ilue B. Resting in offset c is a short flue-section, D, having a flaring mouth, d, at its top and provided with the perforated cover e. It will be seen that by this arrangement sparks and cin ders are effectually prevented from exit at top of chimney and fall back into bottom of flue, from whence they may be readily removed.
The flue D extends beyond the roof, and is surrounded by an outer casi ng, E. This casing extends below the roof, and is held in place by the vertical flange cl and dowel-pins e and angle-plate c?, as shown. This angleplate or gland fits snugly against the bottom of the outer casing, and is cemented or otherwise secured to the roof, thus forming a tight joint. Casing Eis surn'iounted by an ornamental inetal top, F. This top is preferably of the form shown in the drawings, and is provided with the smoke-exit f. This top is (No model.)
l provided on three of its sides with downwardprojecting flanges, and on two of its sides itis provided with tongues g, sliding in grooves g' in the upper portion of casing E. v
By reference to Figs. 2, 3 it will be seen that the tongues project beyond one end of casing E, and are there provided with a perforation, into which is itted a key or pin, Z, as shown. By this arrangement the top can be readily applied and securely held in place. At the end of the top not having the downward-projecting flange the top of casing E is extended, as at m, Figs. 2, 3, thus preventing an access of air, which would otherwise occur at this point. The parts D, E, and F are preferably made of metal.
The operation of applying my device is as follows: When it is desired to placev my improvement on chimneys already in use, the same may be applied by untopping the ehimney to within a short distance beneath the roof. The casting C is then securely built in the top of the chimney and the parts D, E, and F secured thereto, as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 4 I have shownthe method of applying my device to new buildings or to buildings not having brick flues. In this case I form the flue in sections, bb b2, each section having telescopic ends and provided. with lateral flanges n, and fastened by the bolts or rivets o, the casting C secured to the upper section, b2, as shown. lThe lower section, b, is enlarged, as shown, and affords ready access for cleaning the flue. Branch flues a extend from main flue B, as shown.
By constructing the chimney as described it will be seen that the saine can be easily put up and securely fastened. AIt effectually prevents the danger of fire by protecting the portions of the building next the chimney, and also presenting a neat and ornamental top.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new isl. A chimney-top consisting of a casting provided with an internal offset and a lateral extension at its top, having an upwardly-projecting liange, a fiue'section supported upon the offset of the casting and provided with a perforated cover, a casing supported upon the lateral extension of the casting, aud an apertured cap secured to said casing, substantiall y as herein shown and described.
2. The combination, with the casting G, provided with the offset c and a lateral extension 5 having the ange c2, of the flue-section D, sup-y ported upon the offset of the casting and pro vided with the perforated cover c, and a casing supported upon the lateral extension of the casting, substantially as herein shown and de- 1o scribed.
tongues g, fitting in the grooves of the casing, substantially as herein shown and descrlbed. I5
4. In a chimney-top, the combination, with the casing E, having the grooves g in its upper end, of the cap F, provided with the tongues g, projecting beyond the casing and perforated, and the pins Z, inserted in the said 2o perforations, substantially as herein shown and described. v
