UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHAN LUDVIG \VALDEMAR OLSEN, OF COPENHAGEN, DENMARK.
WATER-LEVEL ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 361,968, dated April 26, 1887.
, Application filed December 27, 1886. Serial No. 222,679. (No model.)
To (0Z6 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JoHAN LUDVIG WAL- DEMAR OLsEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Copenhagen, in the Kingdom of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Level Alarms for Steam-Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a view of the front of a steamboiler provided with my improved waterlevel alarm; and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on line as m, Fig. 1.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
My invention has relation to apparatus for giving an audible alarm on the undue rising or lowering of the water-level in steam-boilers; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts ofsuch an alarm, in which an electric circuit is closed and an alarm sounded on the rising or lowering of the water-level beyond certain limits, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the boiler-front, to which is secured a box, 2, having inwardly doubled flanges 3, which secure a plate or block, 4, of glass, ebonite, or similar non-conducting material.
A bar, 5, of metal,is secured upon the face of the non-conducting block, and the ends of this bar, which is secured in a vertical position, are formed with inwardly-beveled lugs 6, and the upper end of the bar is provided with a stop-lug, 7, above the beveled lug.
A shaft, 8, is journaled with its end projecting through the front of the boiler, and the said outer end of theshaft is provided wit-h an index-hand, 9, the end of which may engage the beveled contact-lugs, the edges of the end being beveled so as to fit against the beveled faces of the lugs and to slide over them. An arm, 10, projects from the shaft within the boiler, and has a float, 11, upon its end,
which float will be supported upon the surface of the water in the boiler and rise and fall with the same.
One wire, 12, of an electric circuit is secured to a binding-post, 13, upon the contact:
bar, and this circuit is provided with a battery, 14, electromagnetic alarnrbells 15, and has its other end secured to the boiler in any suitable manner.
It will now be seen that as .the water either rises or falls in the boiler the arm with the float will rise andfall and the index willcome in contact with the lower or upper beveled I contact-lug, closing the circuit andsounding the alarm, and if the water-level in the boiler sinks very low the index will be stopped from being tilted too far up by the stop-lug at the upper end of the contact-bar.
By having the inner faces of the contactlugs beveled, and by having the edges of the end of the index-hand beveled, the said beveled edges may slide over and scrape the beveled contact surfaces, cleaning any dirt which may have accumulated upon them off from the said faces, and thus insuring a contact at all times.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 'In a water-leve1 alarm for steam-boilers,the combination of a box upon the boiler-front having inwardly -doubled flanges holding a non-conducting block, a contact-bar secured vertically upon the non-conducting block and having inwardly-beveled contact-lugs at its ends and having a stop-lug at its upper end,a shaft journaled in the boiler-front and having an index-hand upon its outer end playing between the contactlugs and having an arm within the boiler provided with a float, and an electric circuit having suitable battery and electromagnetic alarm-bells and connected to the contact-bar and to the boiler at its ends. as and for the purpose shown-and set forth. I
In testimonywhereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHAN LUDVIG WALDEMAR OLSEN.
