CLAMPING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 361,777, dated April 26, 1887. -Application filcd Deccmber 4, 1886. Serial No. 220,756. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEFFERSON PATTEN, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the clamping device for which United States Letters Patent N 0. 351,550 were issued to ChesterA.Weller on the 26th day of October, 1886; and the object of my invention is to provide a clamping device in which all of the three jaws ZIIOVG toward and from each other at the same ime.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts and details, all as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved clamping device. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side view, and Fig. 4 is a face view, of the device for adjusting the inclination of the frame.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The casing or frame A is provided with a notch or recess, B, and the two opposite inclin'ed guides 0, containing sliding jaws D, connected by links E with a cross-piece, F, in the bottom recess, G, of the frame. A screw, H, has a smooth part, H, passed through a collar, H in the bottom of the casing. Above the part H the screw H has a right-hand thread, J, passed through a correspondinglythreaded aperture in the cross-piece F. The upper end of the screw hasaleft-hand thread, K, passed into a corresponding aperture in a' jaw, L, mounted to slide in a guide, N, in the bottom of the notch or recess B. A suitable key is provided for turning the screw.
The article to be held is placed in thenotch B of the frame and the screw turned on its longitudinal axis, whereby the cross-piece F is moved downward and the jaws DD moved toward each other. At the sametime the jaw L is moved upward by the action of the left- .hand screw K. All three jaws are thus moved versing the direction of the screw the parts are moved from each other.
On one side of the frame A a series of radial grooves, a, are provided, which can receive radial ribs 1), formed on one side of awing, c, of a plate, 0, which can be fastened on a bench. A screw,- d, passes from the frame A through a central aperture, 0, of the wing 0, and a nut, f, is screwed on said screw. When the nut f is loosenedthe frame A can be drawn slightly from the wing c and inclined more or less. It is then moved toward the wing so that the ribs 1) in the wing 0 can pass into the grooves a. Then the bolt is drawn up to hold the parts in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A clamping device consisting of a casing provided with two sliding jaws adapted to slide toward and from each other, a crosspiece connected by links with the jaws, and a screw passed through a screw-threaded aperture in the cross-piece and provided with a reverse thread which is passed into a third jaw, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a clamping device, the combination, with a casing having guides, of sliding jaws in said guides, a cross-piece, links connecting the cross-piece with the sliding jaws, a screw passed through ascrew-threaded aperture in the cross-piece, the upper end of the screw having a thread the reverse of that of the screw passed through the cross-piece, the reversely screw threaded end of the screw be ing passed into a third jaw, and a collar in the bottom of the frame, in which collar the screw turns, substantially'as shown and described.
3. In a clamping device, the combination,
with a frame having jaws and a series of radial grooves in one side of the frame, of a plate provided with a wing having radial ribs fitting in the radial grooves in the frame, and a bolt in the frame, which bolt is passed through an aperture in the center of the wing having the radial ribs, and a nut on said screw, substantially as shown and described.
