Description

United States Patent Primary Examiner-George J. Marlo AtmmeyArthur B. Colvin ABSTRACT: This invention relates to a golf-training device and more particularly to a putting guide which will enable the golfer to practice putting. The device comprises an upright post which may be detachably secured in the putting green at the position of the ball, the post rigidly mounting a reel at its lower end which carries a cord or tape which may be extended and detachably secured at the edge of the hole, the tape serving as a guide for the golfer. The height of the upright post is such that it may be grasped by the golfer without bending.
PATENTED SEP1 4 l97l INVI'IN'I'UR. GEORGE B. HANSBURG ATTORNEY GOLF-PUTTING GUIDE It is among the objects of the invention to provide a putting guide which is relatively simple in construction and light in weight so that it may readily be carried by the golfer in a golf bag, for example, and which may be detachably mounted in the ground and which may readily be manipulated by the golfer to provide a guide line with respect to the golf hole to facilitate training of the golfer in putting a ball straight to the hole.
According to the invention, these objects are provided by the arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter described and more particularly recited in the claims.
in the accompanying drawings in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention;
FIG. 1 is a perspective view showing the use of the putting guide.
FIG. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken along line 2-2 ofFlG. l, and
FIG. 3 is a view similar to FIG. 2 taken along line 33 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the putting guide comprises an upright post or standard 11 of any suitable material and preferably of extruded aluminum which can be carried by the golfer from place to place in the golf bag and particularly onto the putting green. 7
The post 11 has a handle or knob 12 at its upper end and an elongated pin 13 extending axially from its lower end, said pin depending from a disc or plate 14 secured to said lower end 15 of the post 11. Positioned directly above the disc or plate 14 is a reel 16 of any suitable type and desirably of the conventional spring return type. The reel 16 is secured to the, post adjacent its lower end as by means of brackets 17. The reel 16 carries a length of tape or cord 18, the free end of which carries a pin 19.
In use of the device, as is clearly shown in the drawings, the golfer locates the post 1 1 on the golf green in upright position by pressing the pin 13 thereof into the ground as is clearly shown in FIG. 3. The golfer then pulls on the tape 18 which is carried by the spring return reel 16 so as to extend the tape to the edge of the hole 21 and then presses the pin 19 into the ground so that the tape 18 will extend in a straight line from the reel 16 to the hole 21.
The tape thus serves as a guide for the golfer to facilitate putting in a straight line to the hole.
With the putting guide above described, a golfer is assured of a straight guiding line from the ball to the hole and this guide line facilitates the golfer in his practice strokes to that he is able to learn the proper grasp of the golf club to facilitate putting in a straight line more readily.
As many changes could be made in the above device, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope of the claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What i claim is:
1. A guide device for assisting a player in putting a gold ball into a gold hole in the ground, said device comprising a post having a pin extending substantially axially outwardly from one end thereof for removable mounting of the post in vertical position in the ground, said post having a height when mounted in the ground such that the upper end of the post may be grasped by the player without bending, said post rigidly mounting a spring return reel adjacent the end thereof from which said pin extends, said reel carrying an elongated tape defining a guiding means which may be drawn outwardly from the reel to the edge of the golf hole, said reel being mounted on an axis at right angles to that of said post, said tape having means at its free end detachably to secure such free end to the ground adjacent the edge of the golf hole.
2. The combination set forth in claim 1 in which said securing means comprises a pin mounted at the free end of said tape.

Claims (2)
