ABSTRACT: A hacksaw frame particularly designed to permit a full stroke of the blade in cutting ofi so-called drift bolts" in a narrow space between wide parallel timbers without injury to the hand of the operator, a framein which positioning of the blade is such as to both expedite the cut and reduce to a minimum possibility of the blade being broken, and a removable attachment to the frame whereby a pruning blade may be substituted for the customary blade with the saw thus becoming adaptable as a pruning instrument.
PATENTEDAUGBI 12m 330227 INVIL'N'I'OR.
co Thomas J. Bras/(en with years of experience. On many occasions it has been found necessary to cutoff three-quarter inch drifl bolts between two timers as to permit but a 2 to 3 inch stroke of the saw, the operation not only being slow but resulting in fingers of the hand holding the tool being skinned and bruised.
[t is understood that attempts have been made to meet adverse conditions, such as above named, by providing an extension made of conduit or pipe and so fonned as to be bolted to the conventional hacksaw. To applicant's knowledge, however, such attempts have proven unsatisfactory, although giving rise to the need of a hacksaw more safe under all conditions to use and of greater adaptability than the type presently used in construction work.
Therefore, it -is a main object of the invention to provide a new and novel hacksaw frame which will allow in practically all instances a full stroke of the saw blade without injury to fingers.
elect to use the saw of this invention rather than one of the conventional type. i
The accompanying drawing showsa preferred embodiment of the invention and forming a part of the specification is as follows, it being understood, however, that the drawing is for the purpose of illustration only, and that such changes in design and construction may be made as do not depart from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the specification and particularly defined in the appended claims.
In the drawing:
F l6. 1 is a side view of the instant hacksaw assembly;
FIG. 2 is an edge view as seen from the top of F IG. 1;
FIG. 3 is an axial view on line 33 of FIG. 1 taken through the handle of the saw and looking in the direction of the arrows;
FIG. 4 illustrates in plan view an attachment which permits use of the invention as a pruning instrument; and
FIG. 5 is a sectional detail similar to FIG. 3 but illustrating a modified form of blade locking and releasing means.
In the drawing, like reference numeral 6 indicates similar parts throughout the different views.
With reference first to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3, numeral 6 indicates the saw frame in general, such frame comprising an elongated longitudinally extending bar 7 of flat stock placed on edge and terminating at its forward end in a rounded laterally turned downward extension 8, the rear end of bar 7 engaging through a slot 9 and integrally connected, as by welding to the upper end of a downwardly extending tubular handle 10. Straddling Another object of the invention is to provide the saw with mounted a stud or pin 12 providing pivotal connection with said plates and the upper end of a link 13 at a point adjacent to the edge of a bar 7.
integrally formed, as by welding, to the rear side edge of link 13 the forward end edge of a second bar 14 lying in the vertical plane of bar 7 but slightly below the latter and having slight relative longitudinal movement with respect thereto this bar 14 riding in downward extension of slot 9 and across the up er endpf slug l5 axially movable in the handle 10.
rotrudmg laterally from the lower ends of bar extension 8 and the link 13 are the customary pins 16 and 16 which the bar 7 from the bottom edge at substantially its longitudinal center and welded to the side faces of the bar are a pair of plates 11 having aligned transverse openings in which is removably engage through respective openings in the ends of the saw blades 17.
Threaded axially through a plug 18 in the lower end of handle 10 is a thumbscrew 19 provided at its upper end with a cap which engages the slug l5 and maintains the latter in contact with the free end of bar 14 which functioning as a lever, draws the link counterclockwise sufficiently to tighten the blade 17 to reverse action of the just-described leverage.
In the modification shown in FIG. 5, a thumbscrew 20 threaded through a plug 21 in the handle 10 has pivotal connection 21 at its upper end with the bar 14 sufficient clearance being allowed for proper functioning of the blade locking and releasing leverage.
In FIG. 4 there is illustrated a tubular member 22 longitudinally slotted at its inner end and clamped to the bar 7 by bolts 23 extending through openings 24 in the bar. With the attachment of this member 22 the saw becomes an instrument adaptable for pruning.
What I claim is:
1. In a hacksaw, the combination with a cutting blade, of a frame including an elongated bar terminating at its forward end ina downwardly turned lateral extension, a handle comprising a tubular member having a longitudinal slot in its cylindrical wall and to which wall the other end of said bar is integrally connected, a fixed lug depending from an intermediate-point of said bar, a link having pivotal connection with said lug adjacent the lower edge of the bar, a second bar integrally connected at its forward end to said link and its rear end slidable through the slot in said handle, the lower ends of both said lateral extension from said first named bar and said link being engaged with respective ends of said cutting blade, and manually operable means axially movable in said handle for raising and lowering the free end of said second named bar and thus effect respectively the rearward and forward swing of the said link.
2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said lug comprises a pair of opposing plates straddling the lower edge of the said elongated first named bar.
3. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said first and second named bars and said link are of rigid fiat stock all lying in the same plane, and said laterally turned first-named bar extension end and said link are of such relative lengths that the said cutting blade is at an acute angle to the horizontal.
4. The combination according to claim 1 wherein said tubular handle includes a fixed plug in its lower end and having a threaded axial bore, a thumbscrew in said bore and an axially movable slug interposed between said screw and the free end of said second named bar.
5. The combination according to claim 3 and which includes a tubular extension detachably to the said first-named bar thus making the device into an instrument for pruning.
