Abstract

A tonglike instrument for pulling tubes in the high-voltage box of television sets, the device including a pair of pivotable arm members each of which has a circular gripping end which when closed together will encompass and grip the tube easily from its socket without the user coming into contact with the high voltage, one of the gripping ends having a discharge prong, and the instrument including an alligator clip for electrically engaging a television set chassis.

Remy Lee Mal/ 720 VACUUM TUBE PULLING TOOL This invention relates to tonglike tools and more particularly to a tool for pulling vacuum tubes.
It is therefore the main purpose of this invention to provide a vacuum tube pulling tool which will prevent the serviceman from receiving a high-voltage shock when servicing the highvoltage section of a television.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tool of the described type which will have insulated handle grips which when grasped and closed will cause the forward end of the arms of the device to grippingly and nonslippingly engage the vacuum tube that is to be pulled and one of the arm members includes a discharge prong.
A further object of this invention is to provide a vacuum tube pulling tool which will have a wire, an alligator clip for engaging the chassis. Servicemen when servicing television sets formerly used a screwdriver to discharge the high voltage and may not receive an electric shock when removing a tube, however, if condensers recharge they will receive an electric shock in replacing a new or old tube after testing it. This device greatly reduces the possibility of the serviceman receiving an electric shock of high voltage which may be fatal by the ground clip being engaged to the high-voltage box or chassis of the set.
The discharge prong of the tool is touched to the grid cap of the tube in order to discharge the high voltage, after which the end portions of the tool is used to engage and remove the tube.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a vacuum tube pulling tool which is simple in design, inexpensive to manufacture, rugged in construction, easy to use and efficient in operation.
These and other objects will become readily evident upon a study of the 14 and the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIG. 1 is side view of the present invention shown in elevation and partly broken away; and
FIG. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view taken along the lines 2-12 2 ofFlG.1.
According to this invention, a vacuum tube pulling tool is shown to include a pair of pivotable arms 12 which are secured pivotably together by means of a pivot pin 13. A pair of washers 14 one of which is shown serves as a bearing surface for either side of tool 10 and each of the arms 11 and 12 are bent to form a loop portion 15 which is covered with insulation 16, the loop portions 15 providing handle grip means for tool 10.
Arm I2 is provided at its other end with a semicircular member 17 and arm 11 is provided with a similar member which is terminated by a projecting discharge prong 19.
Member 17 and 18 serve to encompass and grippingly engage a vacuum tube, (not shown) in order to pull it from its socket on the interior of semicircular members 17 and 18 is a rubber cement coating 20 which serves to frictionally engage the exterior of the tube in order that it will not slip from tool 10 when it is being removed from the television set or the like.
A wire 21 having an alligator clip 22 is secured to arm 11 between the pivot pin 13 and the loop portion 15 of arm 11 and is used to grip the chassis or high-voltage box of the television set.
In use, alligator clip 22 of wire 21 is placed upon the chassis and discharge prong 19 of arm 11 is touched to the grid cap of the vacuum tube in order to discharge the voltage, the semicircular members 17 and 18 are then engaged to the vacuum tube by closing or urging together the loop portions 15 of tool 10. Tool 10 is then used to pull the vacuum tube from its socket. When replacing a tube clip 22 is then engaged again to chassis.
What I now claim is:
l. A vacuum tube pulling tool comprising a pair of pivotably secured arms, a pair of semicircular tube-gripping members carried by said arms, a discharge prong carried by said tool and a wire and alligator clip carried by said tool providing a means of engaging the chassis of a television set. I
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said arms of said tool are secured by a pivot pin extending through both of said arms and washer means on the exterior of said tool receive said pivot pin and provides bearing means for said arms.

The combination according to claim 2, wherein said arms are terminated at one end by said semicircular members, said semicircular members having a rubber cement coating for grippingly engaging a vacuum tube in order that said tube may be pulled by said tool and one of said semicircular members includes a projecting discharge prong for discharging high voltage when touched to the grid cap of a vacuum tube in the high-voltage section of said set, and the opposite ends of said arms are terminated by loop portions covered with a suitable insulation, said loop portions forming handle grip means for closing said semicircular members to the exterior of said tube i r101 10 5 according 26 forms a 28 for gripping 4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said wire and alligator clip are secured to one of said arms and said alligator clip forms a means for gripping the chassis of said set to prevent the serviceman from receiving a high-voltage shock.

Claims (4)

1. A vacuum tube pulling tool comprising a pair of pivotably secured arms, a pair of semicircular tube-gripping members carried by said arms, a discharge prong carried by said tool and a wire and alligator clip carried by said tool providing a means of engaging the chassis of a television set.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said arms of said tool are secured by a pivot pin extending through both of said arms and washer means on the exterior of said tool receive said pivot pin and provides bearing means for said arms.
3. The combination according to claim 2, wherein said arms are terminated at one end by said semicircular members, said semicircular members having a rubber cement coating for grippingly engaging a vacuum tube in order that said tube may be pulled by said tool and one of said semicircular members includes a projecting discharge prong for discharging high voltage when touched to the grid cap of a vacuum tube in the high-voltage section of said set, and the opposite ends of said arms are terminated by loop portions covered with a suitable insulation, said loop portions forming handle grip means for closing said semicircular members to the exterior of said tube i rl0110 5 according 26 forms a 28 for gripping
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said wire and alligator clip are secured to one of said arms and said alligator clip forms a means for gripping the chassis of said set to prevent the serviceman from receiving a high-voltage shock.
