ART OF PREPARING TUBES FOR DRAWING. No. 359,703. Patented Mar. 22, 1887;
NITED 'ra'rns "Artur @rrros,
lVINSLOlV AlL-LDERDIC-E, OF WAltR-EN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WARREN TUBE COHPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ART OF PREPARING TUBES FOR DRAWENG.
SPECIFICATICN forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,703, dated hiaroh 22, 1887.
Application filed January 20, 1887. Serial No. 224,827. (No speeimcnsl To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wmsrlow ALLnnRnroE, a citizen of the United States, residing at (Varren, Trumbull county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improveinentin the Process of Preparin Metal Tubes to be Drawn and Polished, of which thefollowiug is a specification.
My invention consists in filling one end of the tube with a metal plug and then heating the same and reducing it by hammering or pressure to a less diameter lhan the die through which the tube is to be drawn and into a suitable shape to be grasped by a clamp for drawing the tube, as hereinafter more particularly described.
In thedrawings forming apart of this specification, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a tube with a solid metal plug. in one end. Fig. 2 is a like section of the same after being reduced to a suitable form for drawing the tube through a die. Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same; and lligm lc represents the tube in position to be drawn, by means of clamp 0, through die 3, for the purpose of smoothing or polishing the tube.
The tube is intended to be drawn through the die, either cold or at less than a red heat,
which requires a great strain, and that it I especially when an inner die or bulb is used, as well as an outer die, to smoothly finish both the inner and outer surfaces of the tube at the same time.
In the process of preparing tube a to be drawn through the die, a solid metallic plug, a, is driven into one end of the tube and fills the same. I prefer to expand the end of the tube by heating it before driving in the plug. The end of the tube and the plug are then to be heated,preferably, to a Welding heat, and reduced. by hammering to a suitable diameter and shape to pass through the die and be grasped and held by the clamp.
I claim as my invention- The process of preparing metal tubes to be drawn through a die, consisting of, first, filling one end of the tube by forcing in it a metal plug; second, heating the plug and end of the tube, and, third, reducing the same by hammering or otherwise drawing it to the required size and shape to pass through the die and be grasped by a drawing-clamp, substantially as described.
