Description
UNITED". STATES PATENT OF ICE.
THOMAS COYLl-I, U1" BALTIMORE, ARYLASD.
'iMPROVED MODE 0F APPLYING CEMENT IN MAKING ClSTRNS.'RESEfiVOlRS. PIERS. &c.
$pct'ilituliim t'onning part of L tters To all whom it may com-cm Be it known that l, Tumus ortia, ot'ihe cityot' Baltimore, State of Maryland. have in vented, constructed. made, and applied touse a new and useful Improvement in the Modem iron kettle over nsntlicient tire to melt it,altcr which tlz-eclay must be added until it assumes thoroughly stirred and boiled until it becomes a dark-brown color and sutlicicutly elastic Patent \'o. 355 dated .tugu-t ll", k227i In forming vessels to keep out water it is necessary. lirst. to lind if the gravity of the ccnient itself will resist the pressurcot' water. it not. let a sutlicit-ut body 0l'cl1l \'bc put. over the cement. and. it' uecessanna plank floor \vell braced over all.
= leave a vacancy between the brick or stones I sutficieut to form an inner space of about an inch. Then grout with the cement. by which 5 means the wall becomes pcriectly impervious to water.
In forming the walls oi columns of bridges let a box surround the stones foiming'thc wall, pour the boiling cement in in sutlleieut quantitles till the water is 'disgorged and the loun- 5 (lotion-stones reached, which will become as tirmly cemented as it there was an absence of all water. For chambers of canals. vaults, a stoutuess of thick plastcriug-mortar, then is the same.
that the action of the cold will not cause it to crack, and sutlicicntly hard that the action of i the sun will not canse it. it expo ed. to run. 1
'l'besceuds may be obtained by judicious hoiling. The cement musthc always applied while I hot,'aud it will require a hot instrument to spread it.
In forming a. wall or vessel oi any kind,
formed of planks or bricks. having a space or sutlicient width to form thethirltness ot' the wall intended to. be cast. then pour in the ccment until the space he llllml. When the cemcnt becomes hard the planks can be removed. To prevent the lanks from adhering. let paper or some other substance be spread over theta. after which, the cement bec mes hard, the planks can be reiumcd with ease and dispatch.
In forming a bottom to a. cistern or any other vessel care must be taken to cut oil all the paper where thejoiuts are t'ormcd,or where the hot and the cold cement is iutcuded to be united.
Although I have described the manner of using and applying this cement for various purposes, I wish it to be distinctly nudcrsttnul that I do not claim to be the imfentor-uf the. cement itself or of its application to keep out moisture in cellars, vaults. &c.: nordo I claim the application thereof to such purposes in a heated state. this being necessary in all cases 1 and a thing well known; but either to keep in or out water, let a frame be i l l I day oRAngust, in the year of our Lord 1537.
