WENDELLDBELDEN ATTORNEY CARD INDEX FILE DISCUSSION OF THE PRIOR ART Card filing indexes with improvement features are shown in US. Pat. No. 1,898,533 issued to Harriman Feb. 21, 1933. The Harriman patent discloses a support plate slidably mounted on a base with guiding means in which the support plate can be moved.
The US. Pat. No. 1,120,548 issued to Schaffert Dec. 8, 1914 discloses spring means attached to a support plate in a card index for holding the support plate erect.
The U.S. Pat. No. 3,250,274 issued to Mathiesen May 10, 1966 suggests a dihedral angular baseplate structure for supporting a card index file. The structural features shown in the above-cited references disclose the present state of the art. However, these patents do not have the utility and the novel features shown in the invention which I shall disclose.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The object of this invention is to provide a card index file in which the information on the cards filed therein is easily and quickly accessible.
Another object of this invention is to disclose means in a card index file by which the index cards themselves are easily inserted or removed from the index file.
Still another object of this invention is to disclose a unique platform surface upon which the index cards slide easily for quick access to the information contained on the cards.
Another object of this invention is to disclose a support plate with unique features for supporting the index cards.
More specifically, it is the object of this invention to provide a card index file comprising a split curved surface with a slidable support plate, the curved split platform surface being mounted in a dihedral angular baseplate.
An additional object of this invention in addition to providing a card index file is to provide a card suitable for use with the card index file as described herein.
IN THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is an isometric view showing the card index file with a suitable index card;
FIG. 2 is an isometric view showing the card support plate in two sections;
FIG. 3 is an isometric view of the complete support plate assembly; and
FIG. 4 is an isometric view showing an index card suitable for use with the card index file described herein.
In order to fully understand the invention, reference is made to FlG. 1. The card index file comprises a curved split platform 1 which is secured in a baseplate 2. The baseplate 2 is bent to form a dihedral angle 3. The dihedral angle formed is approximately 125, this angle being selected to provide suitable visibility of the information placed on all of the cards as they are catalogued in the file. The curved split platform 1 is connected into the base plate 2 at positions 4 and 5 intersecting each of two plane surfaces, as shown on the drawing. Spacing of the split platform 1 is sufficient to permit the opening 7 to admit a card 6 when the front support plate 8 is removed. Front support plate 8 comprises two flat sections of material M and 15 assembled in such a manner so that section 14 slides freely in the flanged edges of section 15. Section 141 has sliding means 12 and cleats 16 in the lower extremity to hold front support plate 8 in an erect position. These cleats 16 which are located on sliding means 12 rest in perforations on each side of platform 1 forming a track section 17. A spring 10 is shown on the front side of 14 attached to attaching means 11 and to the sliding means 13 in the lower extremity at 15 at position 9. To move the front support plate 8 in either direction on the platform 1, FIG. 11, lift section 14 to raise the cleats 16 from tracks 17, FIG. 1. When cleats are free, the front support plate 8 can be removed or moved to any desirable position on the stationary platform, the position selected being suitable to properly support the index cards 6.
Reference is made to FIG. 2 which portrays the front support plate 8 in two sections 14 and 15. This figure shows clearly section 14 with sliding means 12 and cleats 16 with means 11 to connect spring 10, FIG. 3. Section 14 is fitted in juxtaposition to section 15 by sliding the section into slots 18.
Reference is made to FIG. 3 which shows the front support plate 8 completely assembled, spring 10 furnishing tension means to hold sections 14 and 15 and cleats 16 in position on the track 17 FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 portrays an index card which is suitable to use with the index card file described herein.
1 claim:
1. An index card file comprising a baseplate, a curved platform surface, and a front support plate,
a. the said baseplate being bent to form a dihedral angle,
b. the said curved platform surface being split and intersecting the said baseplate in each of two plane surfaces, and
c. the said front support plate being slidably mounted in position on the said curved platform surface.
2. The index card file as claimed in claim 1, wherein the said curved platform surface is provided with an opening to admit an index card.
3. The index card file as claimed in claim 2, wherein the said curved platform surface has perforations in the outer edge of each side of tee said curved surface.
4. The index card file as claimed in claim 3, wherein the said front support plate comprises in combination a first and a second flat section,
a. the first said flat section having flanged edges, sliding means and means to attach a spring in the lower extremib. the second said flat section having sliding means in the lower extremity with cleats attached on each end of the said sliding means and means on the outer front surface to connect a spring thereto,
c. the said first and second flat section being in juxtaposition one to the other, the said first and second sections being connected together with the said spring means.
