Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE PALMER, OF KLITTLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 35,888, dated July l5, 1862.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PALMER, of Littlestown, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lifting and Force Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a clear and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which the gure shows a section through and the whole internal arrangement and action of all the parts.
My invention consists iu the internal arrangement and combination of the enlarged water-space above the valves, the plate or buoy on the pumprod, the concave cap on and over the lower valve, and the mode of adjusting the stroke ofthe piston on the pump-handle, and the spring or bumper to lift the handle.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The peculiar construction of my improved pump is that I makethe cavities of the upper part ofthe stockA and the section, as far down as the valves are placed, from two to eight times larger than the tube or bore of theparts below. In the section B the lower box, b, and valve z are secured. On a stem of the valve y is a cap, x, larger than the opening c through the box b, which materially aids the Working ofthe valve. The cavity D, where the stationary box and valve are placed, should 'be twice thesize of the bore or tube C. Any convenient distance above the stationary valve z the plunger E may be placed. The cavity F, i'or it to work in, should be at least twice the size of the cavit-ybelow it, so that the opening e through the plunger E will admit freely as much Water as can be drawn up through the tube C. The cavity Aor space G above where the plunger works I make still larger, so las to havealarge body of water at the head. To the plunger E, I attach a float or buoy of wood, H,which acts as a counter-balance to the plunger E, and controls the working of the valve in it. To the top of the float or buoy H is attached the piston or pump rod h, which works through a packing, z', in the partition I, so that the water is confined in the space G when being used to force above the spout or delivery K. There is a small tube,j, to adn mit air into the cavity G when used for drawing water; but it must be stopped when used as a forcepump, as also the outer end of the spout K, and the water will rise in the tubec, open the valves oto the airchamber P, and be forced out in a continuo-us stream at the spout Q.
On the top of the piston-rod 7i is a link or toggle-joint, m, with which it is connected to the pump-handle L, the same having a series of holes,l Z,in it, so that the length ofthe stroke of the piston and plunger maybe varied byl shifting the pin on the link from one hole to another. In the stock A, and under the axle n of the pum p-handle, is placed a spring or bumper, r, which comes in contact with the downward movement of thehandle and causes it, in connection with the iioat or buoy PI, to react, so that it requires no other force or power to lift the handle to work the pump. The force being all applied to the downward motion makes it very easy to operate, and a larger body of water can be raised with less power and forced to a greater elevation by the above-described arrangement and mode of construction than by anything that has yet come to my knowledge.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The internal arrangement, consisting ofthe enlarged cavities or waterspace above the valves, in combination with the buoy or ioat H, acting upon the plunger E,the stationary cap-valves :c y z, the adjustable toggle-jointm,
,connecting with the pump-handle L, and the bumper r, all constructed and arranged substantially in the manner herein specified.
GEORGE PALMER.
