POT AND LID LIFTER.
No. 358,803. Patented Mar. 1, 1887* N. PETERS, Photo-ulhn ra hnr. Washin ton, I10.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WV. GHESTN UT, OF ALLEGHENY CITY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN C. BARNES, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
POT AND LID LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 358,803, dated March 1, 1887. Application filed November 11, 1 886. Serial No. 218,553. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN W. GHEsTNU'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at A1legheny City, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pot and Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to provide a combination culinary utensil which shall comprise several useful articles in one, said articles being arranged and combined or cast in a single piece, and each being capable of use independent of the other and without the remaining elements interfering therewith; and the invention consists in certain features hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a utensil of the class described constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, illustrating a modification of the handle;and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line mzvof Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 3, A represents the handle or haft, to which is attached the scales A, preferably formed of wood or other heat non-conducting material, the bait being perforated, as at A", for the re ception of screws orrivets, which pass through the same and the scales.
Formed at the front end of the handle A, integral therewith and extending therefrom, is an ordinary poker, B, and at the juncture of the handle and poker and inclined downwardly is a lid-lifter, 0. Depending downwardly from the front and rear ends of the handle are pot hooks or lifters D, the bottoms of which are flattened, as at D, to form a base, whereby the device as a Whole is supported and the handle prevented from com ing in contact with the stove or floor, and obviating the necessity of the hands of the operator getting soiled.
The entire device is cast in a single piece, and will be found very useful in the kitchen,
in that the fire may be poked or raked, a lid removed for the purpose of supplying fuel, and pots may be shifted from one hole to another or taken from or placed on the stove without the necessity of changing tools each time.
If desired, I may form the handle as shown in Fig. 2-that is, of metal-in which instance it would be preferable to perforate the same in order to lighten the article and prevent the handle from being overheated.
On account of the poker and lid-lifter being located at one end it is evident that the weight of the same would be sufficient to tilt the rear end of the device upwardly and cause it to fall over, and for the purpose of forming a front support I extend the lower end of the lid-lifter down to the same plane as is the base D, so that the device restsupon the three supports.
Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device of the class described, a bandle provided with a poker and lid-lifter at one end and with three depending pot hooks or lifters, substantially as specified.
2. In a device of the class described, a handle provided witha poker and lid-lifter at its front end, and having depending pot-lifters flattened at their bottoms to form a support for the device, substantially as specified.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a handle, a poker, and a lid-lifter and potlifters, said lid and pot lifters being extended to the same plane to form a base for supporting the device in a vertical position, substantially as shown and described.
4. The herein-described casting, consisting of the handle A, having the depending potlifters D D, and the projecting lid-lifter O and poker B, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
JOHN NV. CHESTNUT.
