Hence particularly, the invention relates to folding the end .of the wrapping while rotating the wrapped cylinder. According to the invention there is provided a rotatable folding body having a helical groove or land surface extending around the periphery of said body and during the rotation of said folding body, abutting the wrapping material at "the end of said wrapped cylinder so as to fold in said material at said end substantially continuously. The helical groove or land surface may have a varying pitch and/or width, for example decreasing towards one end of the folding body. I
MEANS FOR FOLDING IN WRAPPING MATERIAL AT THE END OF AN APPROXIMATELY CYLINDRICAL ARTICLE The present invention relates to a means for folding in wrapping at the end of a cylindrical article or a roll, comprising members for rotating the article or roll and a folding member arranged at the end of said article or roll.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and serviceable means for folding in the outer wrapping towards the end of a roll which is being wrapped.
Characteristic of the invention is that the folding member comprises a rotatable body engaging the wrapping at said end by means of a helical surface, which during substantially the entire rotation of the body is arranged to abut the wrapping material in order to fold it in at said end substantially continuously.
According to a suitable embodiment of the invention the helical body consists of a roller having a helical groove extending around the periphery thereof to receive an extension of the wrapping projecting from the outer surface of the roll and fold it in towards the end of the roll.
The outer surface of the folding member is situated close to and substantially parallel to the end of the roll and the folding member for the wrapping is oriented in such a way that the entrance of the groove substantially coincides with a part of the circumference of the roll.
The invention will be described more fully in the following with reference to'the accompanying drawings, in which FIG. 1 shows a side view of the means, and
FIG. 2 a view from above of FIG. 1.
The numeral 1 designates a roll, for example a paper roll, which is made to rotate in the direction of the arrow A by means of two driving members 2 in contact with the outer surface of the roll 1. The roll 1 is provided with an outer wrapping which is somewhat wider than the roll itself and thus has an extension 3 projecting at least over one end of the roll 1. In order to fold in the extension 3 towards the end of the roll a folding member is arranged consisting of a substantially roller-shaped body 4 which is rotatably joumaled on a shaft 5. On its outer surface the folding member 4 is provided with a helical groove 6 having a relatively wide entrance 7 situated at the circumference of the roll 1 to initially receive and guide the extension 3. The width of the groove 6 decreases successively towards the center of the roll. Thus, the folding member 3 is so arranged in relation to the end of the roll that its outer surface substantially contacts the end of the roll and is situated substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the roll 1. The axis of the folding member 4 can be set at various angles in relation to the tangent of the roll at the folding point.
With the means shown in the drawings the extension 3 is fed continuously into the entrance 7 of the groove due to the rotation of the roll 1 in the direction of the arrow A and, due to counterrotation of the folding member, the extension is folded in towards the end of the roll in clockwise or counterclockwise direction depending on whether the folding body or folding member for the wrapping is right-hand or left-hand threaded. The distance between the outer surface of the folding member and the end of the roll can thus easily be adapted to the thickness of the outer wrapping used in each case so that the folded extension can be pressed or urged against the end of the roll to the desired extent. The folding member 4 for the wrapping may also be designed in the form of helically running flanges or cams. Its outer surface may possibly be conical and the pitch of the helical surface (groove or cam) may vary from one end to the other. If a conical shape is selected it is preferred to decrease the pitch towards the end of the roll which has the largest diameter. Also the width of the helical groove may vary, preferably by decreasing the width towards said end with the largest diameter.
