Description
(No Mode1.) H. G. L'ANDERS.
' HIDE STRETGHER.
Patented Feb. 15,1887.-
Bf. Washingtnn. n. c
UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HARRY GERSHOM. LANDERS, OF PROTEM, MISSOURI.
HlDE-STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,609, dated February 15, 1887.
Application filed November 5, 1886. Serial No. 218,082.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY GERsHoM LAN- DERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Protein, in the county of Taney and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hide-Stretchers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this improvement is the production of a convenient and economically constructed device, of simple operation, for stretching green hides ofsmall animals. These results are attained by the mechanism illustrated in the drawings herewith filed as part hereof, in which thesanie letters of reference denote the same parts in the different views.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a hidestretcher embodying the features of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a similar representation showing the parts adjusted in different relative positions. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional representation with parts removed, illustrating a modification.- Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional detail view more fully illustrating the modification.
A is a rod provided at one end with a bifurcated eye, a, and at the opposite end, A, with a screw thread and corresponding nut, A B is a sleeve for the rod A. The sleeve B is provided, adjacent to its ends and at opposite sides, with eyes b, secured to the sleeve B by any suitable means. D D are flexible bows, provided at one end with eyes, by means of which they are pivotally secured to the bifurcated end of the rod A, and d d are eyes fixed to the inner sides of the bows D D, the same distance from each other as the eyes b on the sleeve B. C G are rods provided with bifurcated eyes at each end,by means of which they are pivotally connected to the eyes I) on the sleeve B and the eyes d on the bows D D. Each of the bows D are provided at their outer sides with a series of brad projections, as shown at d, for apurpose hereinafter set forth.
Referring to the modification illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4, AAis the rod, provided within the circumference of its end A with directlyopposite series of ratchet-detents a, as fully shown in Fig. 4. B is the sleeve provided (No model.)
sleeve B. B are springs fixed to the pawls B and arranged to bear on the sleeve B and actuate the points of the pawls B into engagement with the ratchet-detents a of the rod A A.
In using the device the parts are adjusted substantially as shown in Fig. l. The brad projections don the outer sides of the bows D D are made to enter the hides near the outer edges of the same. The bows D D are then made to move outward, as shown in Fig. 2, by turning the nut A in such a direction as to move it. and the sleeve B toward the opposite end of the rod A A. The same operation of the bows will be produced by pressing the inner ends of the pawls B out of engagement with the ratchet-detents a in the rod A A and moving the sleeve toward the opposite end of the rod A A, when the parts can be secured in the desired position by re leasing the pawls and allowing them to enter the detents a.
If deemed advisable, the device may be provided with one or more additional arms at opposite sides, as shown at C O, and intermediate of the latter, for the purpose of adapting the same to stretching hides of long animals.
Having explained the features of my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
An implement for stretching hides, consisting ofa series of flexible bows pivoted atone end to a'rod and provided with means, substantially as described, for holding the hides upon their surfaces, a sleeve arranged to move longitudinally upon said rod, a series of links pivotally connected to the sleeve and bows, and connections, substantially as described, for moving and holding the sleeve upon said rod, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
