SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,268, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed August 7,'1886.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES M. BAsINGER, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Snap-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to produce a snap-hook of simple construction which can be manufactured at comparatively small eX- pense; and niy invention consists of the particular improvements in the construction of the snap-hook, which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved snap-hook. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a bottoni plan view, and Fig. 4 a top plan view, of the snap-hook. Fig. 5 is an interior view of the tongue and spring. Figs. 6 and 7 are crosssections in lines x a: and y y, Fig. l, respectively.

A represents the frame ot' the snap-hook, and B the hook, formed at one end of the frame in the usual manner.
C represents a loop formed at the opposite end of the frame A, whereby the snap-hook is attached to the harness or other part.
D represents the tongue, which is pivoted with its rear en'd to the frame A by a horizontal pin or rivet, e, and rest-ing with its outer end against the end of the hook B. Y The tongue D is provided with angular or dependingrears d, which overlap upright ears or lugs c, formed on the upper side of the frame A, and through which the pin or rivet c passes.
E representsa dat spring, which rests with its outer or front end against the under side of the pivoted tongue D, and tends to hold the outer end ofthe tongue against the end of the hook B, so as to close the mouth thereof. The spring E is arranged with its rear portion between the lugs or ears a, and rests upon 45 the pin or rivet e. The inner end of the spring E engages under a projecting plate or lip, f,

connecting the upper portions of the lugs'a, and is held between the lipf and the pin or rivet e. The lip or plate f extends rearwardly 5o to the inner cross-bar, c, of the loop C, so as to afford a large bearing-surface for the inner end of the spring E. The inner surface of the lipf, against which the spring E bears, is inclined, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the spring in its unstrained or normal position will hold the outer end of the tongue D against the end of the hook B. The tongue D is provided at its sides with depending marginalanges g, which hold the spring E against lateral dis: '6o placement and conceal the spring from view. The forward end of the tongue D is also provided with a depending lip or flange, g', whereby the spring is held from sliding forwardly. The spring is held from moving in an opposite direction by the inner cross-bar, c, of the loop C.
The front portion of the lip or plgitef is out away or reduced in thickness, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, to 'form a shoulder, f', against 7o which the rear end ofthe tongue D abuts when in a closed position, whereby the upper surfaces of the tongue and lipf are rendered'tlush, and the joint between these parts given a smooth appearance.
