LEVI K. BRYANT, OF LAWRENCE, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUTTER-JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,188, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed August ll, 1886. Serial No. 210,656. (No model.) i
T0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that'I, LEVI K. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State'of Massachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Packing-Vessels for Butter, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invent-ion is to producea packingvessel for butter open at both ends and closed by covers, one or both being provided with an ornamental design on the inside, so that the contents can be removed in slices or portions as required, with an `ornamental design imprinted thereon.
The invention consists of a cylinder of glass, earthenware, or other suitable material, provided on the outside, at each end, with a screwthread, onto each of which is screwed a cover with an ornamental design on the inside. In one end ofthe cylinder is placed afollower, so that when the cover at that end is removed the contents can be forced toward the opposite end by pressing on the follower, thereby imparting an ornamental design to the butter.
The other cover being then removed and the follower again pressed, the butter is forced out, so that a portion or slice can be cut off, having an ornamental design thereon, and the covers replaced.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents alongitudinal section of a packing-vessel embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section with the covers removed and the contents pushed partly out. Figs. 3 and4 are sectional views ofthe covers. A representsa cylinder, made, preferably, of glass, or it may be of earthenware or any other suitable material, provided onthe outside, at each end, with a screw-thread, B, and shoulder C.
A represents butter contained in the vessel. D D are the covers, provided each with a screw-thread, E, to correspond with that on the cylinder, one or both of the covers being provided with an ornamental design, as shown in the cover D', which design will be imprinted lon the butter contained inthe cylinder.
F F are packing-rings that reston the shoulders C, and when the covers DDl are screwed down tight these rings form an air-tight joint.
,G is a follower.
Vhen it is desired to iill the vessel with butter, the covers are removed from the cylin der and the proper quantity of butter placed therein. The follower G is then put on the top of the butter and the covers screwed on tight, thereby excluding all atmospheric air.
When it is desired to take out a portion of the butter, both lcovers are removed and the follower G pressed down, which will force'the butter out at the opposite end of the cylinder, as shown in Fig. 2, and when suicient has been forced out for use it can be cut off level withl the endof the cylinder and the covers again replaced.
The ornamental design on the inside of one or both of the coversI D D' will be imprinted on the butter, so that the design may be impressed upon every portion or slice cut off, thereby giving it a very neat appearance for table use.
It will thus be seen that the butter can bek always kept in a sweet and clean condition, and when required for use the requisite portion can be readily removed by simply pressing down the follower and cutting off the projecting portion without touching it with the hands.
What I claim as my invention is The covers D D', one or both provided with an ornamental design on the inside, in combination with the cylinder A and follower G, for
packing butter, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
p LEVI K. BRYANT.
