UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHNSW'EFNY, OF SALISBURY, CONNECTICUT.
DEVICE FOR CUTTING, CARVlNG,
AND FLUTlNG BONE, HORN, 8L0.
SPECIFICATION forming part ofLetters Patent No. 354,876, dated December 21, 1886.
Application filed August 13, 1886.
T0 all'whcm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SWEENY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salisbury, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, haveiuvented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Cutting, Carving, and Fluting Bone, as described; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in devices for cutting, carving, and fluting bone, horn, and like substance in imitation of stag-horn; and it consists inthe construction, combination, and arrangement'of the parts in the accomplishment of this result, substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of my invention. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line mm, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a modification with the ends of the sections broken away.
The principal feature of my invention consists in combining in one device or tool a series of sectional cutters, with different-shaped ends on each cutter, each of said cutters having a series of diiferent-beveled cutting-points in the end thereof, said device or tool being moved over a waved guide-bar inserted between any two of the sectional cutters for the purpose of forming a regular or irregular motion, as may be desired.
In carrying out my invention, I employ an approximately oblong-shaped device or tool, A, having tapered ends, whereon are fitted correspondingly-shaped handles a a, and this device or'tool is formed with four or more downwardly-projecting cutting-sections, a, between which sections are formed recesses or spaces a, provided on their inner and side edges with beveled ends, the purpose of which will appear farther on.
Each cutting-section a hasdifferent-shaped lower ends, wherein are formed dissimilar .Serial 170.210,?69. (No model.)
points or edges 1), beveled from their lower front edge forwardly, said points or edges being designed to act upon the rounded surface of the knife-stale in the cutting, carving, or
fluting of the bone'or horn in imitation of stag-horn.
B is an oblong narrow guide-bar, the upper edge of which is provided throughout its length with curved or waved portions 1), irregular in their formation, and this guide-bar is designed to be placed within any one of the recesses or spaces a, so as to cause the device or tool, together with its cutting-sections, to have an inordinate or uneven motion when heing drawn over the curved or waved portion of said bar.
In operation the knife-scales are shaped and figured prior to being cut, carved, or fluted, and the knife-scale, bone or horn, or other material to be acted upon, is placed parallel with the curved or waved guide-bar, after which the device or tool--the handles of which are held by both hands of the operatoris drawn over the guide-bar; and the cutting, carving, or fluting is effected byraising and advancing one of the handled ends of my device or tool and depressing and receding the other corresponding handled end while in motion passing over the said guide-bar, and thus acting upon the knife-scale.
By providing the device or tool with the series of recesses or spaces a", for passing the ,my invention, which consists in providing means for the application of additional force or pressure to the sectional cutters, and the same is accomplished by securing the handles at each end of the device or tool in an upright inclined position also,in providing adjustable 7 what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a'device for cutting, carving, and fluting, I 5
the combination of the tool having a series of cutting -sections of dissimilar ends, the recesses formed between said sections, and the guide-bar having a curved or waved portion,
said recesses being adapted to receive the 20 guide-bar, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SWEENY. Witnesses:
