Description

(No Model.) I
H. W. LIBBEY.
NAIL- N0. 354,154. Patent-ed D60. 14, 1 886.
.SYCKW wa l NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
HOSEA W. LIBBEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
NAIL.
QPECIFIOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 354,154, dated December 14, 1886.
l I Application filed August 23, 1886. Serial No. 211,673. (NomodolJ To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOSEA WV. LIBBEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a nail that when driven into wood will hold firmly and cannot be easily withdrawn; and the invention consists in constructing a nail of cylindrical wire having an elongated quick spiral groove the whole length of the nail, into which the fiber of the wood will expand when the nail is driven in.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A represents an enlarged view of a nail embodying my invention. a is the head, I) the body, and c the point. dis an elongated quick spiral groove that extends the whole length of the body of the nail.
My invention is particularly adapted for nails made of wire, or what are commonly known as French nails.
It will be seen that when a nail embodying my invention is driven into wood the fiber of the wood will be separated, as with an ordiary nail; but as it is being driven in, the fiber of the wood will expand and fill up the spiral groove, thereby holding the nail firmly.
A nail thus constructed is easily driven, as the fibers of the wood are held intact and enter the groove, holding the nail more firmly in the wood, similar to the action of a screw, without splitting the wood or tearing the fibrous texture of the same.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is A nail composed of cylindrical wire having a single elongated quick spiral groove the entire length of its body, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
